Arctic sea ice melt comes close, but misses record

WASHINGTON - Crucial Arctic sea ice this summer shrank to its second lowest level on record, continuing an alarming trend, scientists said Tuesday. ADVERTISEMENT The ice covered 1.74 million square miles on Friday, marking a low point for this summer, according to NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo. Last summer, the sea ice covered only 1.59 million square miles, the lowest since record-keeping began in 1979. Arctic sea ice, which floats on the ocean, expands in winter and retreats in summer. In recent years it hasn't been as thick in winter. Sea ice is crucial to worldwide weather patterns, both serving as a kind of refrigerator and reflecting the sun's heat. Given recent trends, triggered by man-made global warming, scientists warn that within five to 10 years the Arctic could be free of sea ice in the summer. Even though the sea ice didn't retreat this year as much as last summer, "there was no real sign of recovery," said Walt Meier of the snow and ice data center. This year was cooler and other weather conditions weren't as bad, he said. "We're kind of in a new state of the Arctic basically, and it's not a good one," Meier said. "We're definitely sliding towards a point where the summer sea ice will be gone."

Duh...I love the sentence in the second last paragraph, which is their alarming excuse of why the melt wasn't as bad as last year: "This year was cooler and other weather conditions weren't as bad, he said".

In other words, the ice sheet was about 10% larger than last years record low.

“We’re definitely sliding towards a point where our brains will be all gone.”

There... fixed it.

“Crucial Arctic sea ice this summer shrank to its second lowest level on record, continuing an alarming trend, scientists said Tuesday.”

A reversal of a trend is a continuation of a trend. Got that? It’s essential that we understand these fine points of global warming.

This is interesting:

“Recent massive volcanoes have risen from the ocean floor deep under the Arctic ice cap, spewing plumes of fragmented magma into the sea, scientists who filmed the aftermath reported Wednesday.
The eruptions — as big as the one that buried Pompei — took place in 1999 along the Gakkel Ridge, an underwater mountain chain snaking 1,800 kilometres (1,100 miles) from the northern tip of Greenland to Siberia.”

This is from http://strata-sphere.com/blog/index.php/archives/5589

Maybe now after nine years the water temperature is returning to normal.

Arctic sea ice is useless, if I can’t put it in a rocks glass with some JD in it (salty Jack bad) what good is it?

Did this have anything to do with the underwater volcanoes spewing molten lava into the water? I’d imagine that would warm the artic up a few degrees.

This year was cooler and other weather conditions weren't as bad, he said.

A real scientist would pay attention to the evidence.
And would at least consider that maybe a new trend...
towards cooling may have arrived.

I wonder if many of these climate "scientists" flunked out of
CSI school.

lowest since record-keeping began in 1979

29 years is certainly long enough to make sweeping generalizations about long-term climate changes. The earth is what, 6000 years old? 29 years is almost 1/2 of one percent of the history of the earth.

Oh, wait, we're talking millions of years, with evidence of tropical plants in Antarctica and glaciers covering what is now Chicago. Yeah, 29 years is plenty of time.

You mean the artic had ice this summer? Impossible. I remember being told for months that this summer the artic would be ice free because of global warming.

Did they lie to me?

Another, easier way to look at this: The artic ice was 150,000 square miles larger than last year. Do the math.

“The end of the global warming hoax is in sight.”

Don’t count on it. People don’t let go of religion easily. And the T Boone’s of the world have a lot of money invested in this scheme. PT Barnum would be proud.

“Crucial Arctic sea ice this summer shrank to its second lowest level on record, continuing an alarming trend, scientists said Tuesday.”

Last year's sea ice minimum was WAY below the expected minimum based on projected trends and models before last year. This year's minimum came quite close to the beyond-expectations minimum of last year. So now there's two years in a row of an Arctic sea ice minimum well below the projected decline trend.

Watching the Dow Jones Average the last few days, let's see: it was down ~500, up ~190, down ~450, and now it's currently up 25. Ah, I see the Dow Jones trend is reversing!

Beyond a shadow of a doubt -- no, it doesn't.

Yes, but it can't be phrased like that - doesn't fit the agenda.
