Governor Declares State Of Emergency In Kentucky
WHAS-11 ^ | 12 SEP 2008

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky's governor has signed an order declaring a state of emergency and invoking the state's anti-price gouging law as Hurricane Ike bears down on the Texas coast.

Gov. Steve Beshear signed the order on Friday, saying gas stations started raising fuel prices overnight before the storm made landfall.

Beshear signed the order at the request of Attorney General Jack Conway, who said in a letter released Friday that invoking the law now will help prevent predatory pricing.

I filled up yesterday and so glad I did. Gas was at 3.47. Now I can see with the storm hitting, gas going up a bit, even a quarter, but dollars?? That is just silly. There is no reason for it.

And someone said it would be a shame if because folks bought too much, there was none to send to TX from KY. Can TX even use gas that KY does? There are so many different standards on gas, it may not. They couldn't send any to LA. after Katrina, for that very reason. Another stupid policy, the entire nation should be using the same, and Gov’s should see to it that happens. One standard refining for all states. The most restrictive or the least, but pick one and go with it.

The station in KY closest to my mother refuses to raise his prices until he gets a shipment that costs a higher price. He sells it for a fair price based on the delivery that he is selling. In other words, until the tanks in the ground are empty, and he has to refill them the price is unchanged. And that is as it should be. Whether the price goes up or down, only depends on what he pays for the delivery.

Each car, depending on the price may. Most people in the real world cannot afford to buy as much as they would like when the price is still a bit lower. And will be able to afford even less when the price is jacked up.

These sky high prices may prevent a lot of people from being able to get to work and back, or in some cases, to evacuate. There is no shortage. And one day of shutting down refineries is not going to cripple the gas supply. There needs to be a few less panic buttons everytime a storm hits, or a storm may hit, or someone in the middle east has a hang nail and says ouch.

***An ambulance coming on the scene of an accident and refusing to help until a person signs over property would be an example. That is price gouging to me.***

Isn’t that how Crasius got rich in ancient Rome? He used his private fire department.

Gouging is what happened in 9-11-2001. Gas went up almost three dollars a gallon before the afternoon.

I thought it was $4.09 along I-95 when I came home today, but my son drove that way later & said it was $4.99. I don’t know if one of us mis-read the sign, or if it went up that much in a couple of hours. I guess we’ll find out later tonight when Hubby comes home.....

Well, that will ensure that there isn’t enough gas in Ky. When will people realize that prices are real? High prices are a valuable way to allocate scarce resources.

Politicians would rather demagogue the issue. They probably even know better, but they’re playing to the ignorant.

Wife is home now. Says she saw several stations with OUT of GAS signs up. Prices were from a low of $3.85 to a high of $4.99.

She drives home...I85-I285-I675-I75.

I95 is East Georgia, we are in the Atlanta area.

More and more stations in Asheville running out of gas. Those that have it are charging over $4.50. People are lining up to buy gas where they can find it. Reminds me of the 70s.

It’s like the center of a hurricane that’s outrun by the winds. It will catch up sooner or later.

Makes it even more disturbing that they would SCREW us in a emergency.

We’re fixxin to have low supply and high demand.

Yes, we’re in the southeast, next to the coast. I was wondering if Atlanta would be cheaper since there is more competition up there or more expensive because there is higher demand...

Map of critical pipelines in the United States.

Note how use Houston as starting point or New Orleans:

I just called my favorite gas jockey here in PA. He says the price is now $3.39 and going up by $1 tonight.

$3.39? I must be in the wrong part of PA. It hasn't gotten below $3.55 yet, although on a trip last week I saw that from Harrisburg they had $3.44. Ir's been long time since we've seen $3.39 here in the hinterlands.

$4.55 is going to make it mighty expensive to go to work next week...

I’d say that a shortage of gas due to Hurricane Ike is now pounding nails into our coffins thanks to nutcase environmentalists like Al Gore and “Greens” in Congress.

Can you say 'all your eggs in one basket' ???

the enviro-commies knew you could...

If you need to get down the road, to get to work, you pay anyway.

How are you going to get to work if there is no gas to buy because of price controls? Some people use gas to work.. others use it just to fart around. When the price is raised, those farting around don't buy as much, so that people who need it to get to work have it.

Hubby says that according to coworkers it IS now $4.99 at the interstate, but it was $3.89 when he went to work this afternoon, so he thinks it was also $4.09 when I came home....

Well, if you look at the graph, the price of gasoline didn’t run up nearly as much as the price of crude...if it had, the price would have been $6/gallon for gasoline. So I don’t know where you’re getting your numbers.

What are sellers supposed to do? If it was me I’d cease sales till my wholesale price came down.
