High school sports would substitute for political excitement. Pentecostal and Bible-banging congregations would offer succor, becoming a dominant influence in an isolated town in an isolated state with libertarian leanings and an isolated state capital.

No condescending elitism here. /sarc.

Perhaps we should send the professor a link;

I think he will especially like this one;

...state with libertarian leanings...

Gee, the author seems to think that is a bad thing. Sounds just fine to me.

Ok...so let me get this straight. They can’t destroy this woman directly, so instead they’re going to do a runaround and bad-mouth her town, in the hope that people will put two and two together and say that because her town is ‘crap’, she is ‘crap’.

I don’t really like Savage or listen to him, but I’m really beginning to believe that liberalism IS a mental disorder. These people are just wired wrong if they think this is somehow going to fly with Mr. and Mrs. Small-town America.

Great comment from the paper's opinion board regarding the article:

Wasila Alaska scares you? I suggest you visit the community Obama organized. Bring lots of clean Kevlar underwear.

"Robert M. Thorson is a professor of geology at the University of Connecticut's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and a member of The Courant's Place Board of Contributors."

Professor of geology at a college of liberal arts. I wonder what his peers think of him, most of the ones I know are pretty down to earth. (no pun intended either)

Houses were quickly built on bargain-basement lots. Trailer homes were dragged to many others.

Trailers!!! You're scaring me! < / sarc >

Wasilla may not have made the state capitol, but it will one day be the location of the Northwestern White House.

Thank you Wasilla; thank you Alaska. I knew you would be taking hits when the elitist media threw their temper tantrum after not being able to “Bork” Sarah Palin. But I figured you guys would be tough enough to take everything thrown at you! Just keep it up! The rest of flyover country America are your brothers, and they are standing with you!

Expectations were crushed, leaving a sense of disappointment, even anger. High school sports would substitute for political excitement. Pentecostal and Bible-banging congregations would offer succor, becoming a dominant influence in an isolated town in an isolated state with libertarian leanings and an isolated state capital.

This is the kind of geography that scares me, in spite of Wasilla's stunning natural beauty and vibrant, outgoing personality.

Truly frightening the way these angry (bitter) Bible banging Christians live in this isolated mountain town with only high school football to entertain them. Wait, that sounds just like my town!

>>>many of whom talk openly about seceding from the “Lower 48.” <<<

I’ve been in Alaska for most of my adult life. Can I say “crap” on this forum? It’s more polite than the other words I’d like to write.

You'd be bitter too if you had this level of spelling proficiency (from the learned Prof's home page http://www.stonewall.uconn.edu/thorson/research.html):

Beginning in 1973, I spent eleven years with a principal focus on the archaeological and surficial geology in Allaska

I’m surprised, he left off the clinging to guns line. Got the religion, forgot the guns.

While all this was going on in Alaska, Connecticut cities were becoming relics. We need and buy oil, but windup clocks have gone out of favor.

He’s just mad that Wasilla doesn’t resemble the “Northern Exposure” town.

Need more natives spouting mystical aphorisms.

That said, He’s more or less right about Juneau. One former governor, the late Jay Hammond, once flippantly suggested installing the entire legislature on a modified cruise ship so that it’s offices and staff would be physically constrained in size and that it could be periodically moved and moored in towns up-and-down the immense coastline from Ketchikan to Point Barrow.

That way citizens would have more and regular access to their government and lobbyists would find it next to impossible to set up shop nearby.

Not able to make anything stick on Governor Palin, they now resort to writing hit-pieces on a town?? How utterly ridiculous. Don’t these people realize what they look like to normal people, or is it that they just don’t care about making themselves look like blubberin’ idiots?
