WASHINGTON, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- There were no surprises, no knockout zingers, but also no bloopers Thursday night in Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's first TV interview since becoming the Republican vice presidential nominee.
Charles Gibson of ABC News was out for blood and inherently applied a double-standard compared with the kid gloves George Stephanopoulos used on Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois on Sunday night.
Gibson was out to embarrass Palin and expose her presumed ignorance from the word go. By contrast, when Obama referred to his "Muslim faith" on Sunday and did not correct himself, Stephanopoulos rushed in at once to help him and emphasize that the senator had really meant to say his Christian faith.
By contrast, Gibson tried to embarrass Palin by referring to her Christian faith in asking people to pray for U.S. soldiers in Iraq. Palin countered by pointing out she was following the precedent set by Abraham Lincoln.
Palin also expressed her support for Georgia and Ukraine joining the U.S.-led NATO alliance. That statement was predictable and consistent with the current policy of the Bush administration. The policy has dangerously raised tensions with Russia, but Palin is hardly alone in the conservative/Republican consensus in expressing her support for it.
Palin's assessment of foreign policy was competent and not embarrassing. Although she initially exhibited ignorance of the Bush Doctrine on pre-emptive strikes that has been a central pillar of U.S. foreign policy after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, she recovered quickly and then made the case clearly. Tactically, she made the mistake of trying to be friendly and informal with Gibson, who assumed a superior, professorial and critical stance toward her. She would have been far better going on the attack to rattle him.

Look at it another way. Who came out of that hit piece looking good? Sarah Palin. She made Gibson show himself to be the leftist shill he is. Isn’t that a good thing? In her own way she did attack him and he lost. I’m hopeful that at some point the gloves will be taken off. But I think it should wait until a McCain-Palin victory are assured.
Never wrestle with a pig on national television. If you do, you'll make it harder for the audience to recognize which participant is you and which is the pig.
The best thing McCain and Palin can do is maximize the contrasts between themselves and their opponents. I think they've been doing that very well.
Americans really don't want a President who is going to punch a foreign prime minister in the nose when he feels insulted. On the other hand, real Americans don't want one who will simply cave in to pressure, either.
I only saw snippets of the interview on-line. I saw enough before it aired to know that I didn’t want to tune into ABC to see more.
Know if the VP candidates are slated for only one debate this cycle or if there will be more?
That's the bottom line. I'm surprised how many people don't realize that.
That's fine. If the press wants to take our candidates more seriously than they take their own, so be it. It makes their candidate look fragile.
Amen to that!!!
There is no such thing as “The Bush Doctrine.”
It is an expression created by media talking heads for use with other media talking heads.
There is no United States government paper, finding, directive, or policy EVER printed with such a title.
Well of course to be fair you give the easiest questions to the stupid one.
Sarah is pissing off a lot of folks in the L/MSM. Let them roast in their own hot blood. They daily show the American public how self served in their agendas they are. And the recent polls show more Americans are slowly wising up.
Funny how he tried to make Sarah look stupid by editing her answers, but now the truth is coming out, and he's looking like an idiot for trying to cheat the American public.
Your credibility just went down the toilet, Charlie, and you flushed the handle.
Sarah's got too much class for that. Better to have him hoist himself on his own petard.

I never mentioned the Bush doctrine, therefore I have no idea to what you are responding.
I would like to see her asked if there is an official government policy known as “The Bush Doctrine.”
That would be some pretty tough questioning.
There is no such government doctrine.
I agree with you.
That's not what I am talking about. That's still media with a BIAS. I don't want a right bias or a left bias.
Shouldn't the goal be media presentations without a bias? A "Just the facts, Ma'am" kind of approach.
I understand that the people asking the questions get to make the rules. What I am asking for discussion on is "Will they/should they change their MO to ensure their survival?"
Ooops! Dere It Is!!! But it keeps working because of all the appathy and ignorance... “I don’t know” and “I don’t care!” People too busy or lazy to dig into all of it like we here on FR have will never realize how they’ve been led around by the nose ring on the community organizing’s crowd pig!!!
Sarah Palin, man magnet:
McCain’s veep pick is attracting men who backed Hillary & uniting GOP

Ooops, and thanks Ernest!
“Shouldn’t the goal be media presentations without a bias? A “Just the facts, Ma’am” kind of approach.”
Goal nothing, that should be a prerequisite. Unfortunately it has not existed in my lifetime, nor do I expect that it will.
