WASHINGTON, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- There were no surprises, no knockout zingers, but also no bloopers Thursday night in Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's first TV interview since becoming the Republican vice presidential nominee.
Charles Gibson of ABC News was out for blood and inherently applied a double-standard compared with the kid gloves George Stephanopoulos used on Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois on Sunday night.
Gibson was out to embarrass Palin and expose her presumed ignorance from the word go. By contrast, when Obama referred to his "Muslim faith" on Sunday and did not correct himself, Stephanopoulos rushed in at once to help him and emphasize that the senator had really meant to say his Christian faith.
By contrast, Gibson tried to embarrass Palin by referring to her Christian faith in asking people to pray for U.S. soldiers in Iraq. Palin countered by pointing out she was following the precedent set by Abraham Lincoln.
Palin also expressed her support for Georgia and Ukraine joining the U.S.-led NATO alliance. That statement was predictable and consistent with the current policy of the Bush administration. The policy has dangerously raised tensions with Russia, but Palin is hardly alone in the conservative/Republican consensus in expressing her support for it.
Palin's assessment of foreign policy was competent and not embarrassing. Although she initially exhibited ignorance of the Bush Doctrine on pre-emptive strikes that has been a central pillar of U.S. foreign policy after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, she recovered quickly and then made the case clearly. Tactically, she made the mistake of trying to be friendly and informal with Gibson, who assumed a superior, professorial and critical stance toward her. She would have been far better going on the attack to rattle him.

Sarah held her own just fine because she has the TRUTH on her side.
Is this an interrogation or an interview?
As VP, I'd like to see Palin appoint Dick Cheey as her chief advisor. That will make the Libs' heads explode. That and Ruper Murdoch purchasing the NY Times would make my year.
“[And Charlie], we killed ‘the bridge to nowhere’ and that’s the bottom line”.
I give credit to the editors for not leaving that on the floor.
“Then it would of been nice if Gibson had asked her some serious thoughtful questions in a serious thoughtful manner rather then playing arorgant pompous media clown.”
I have news for you, Gibson wasn’t “playing” anything.
“No one here is whining but you.”
I don’t see it that way, but to each his or her own.
Cheers!
Should try actually watching the interview instead of mindlessly clinging to your “hate McCain always” dogmas. Your comments here demonstrate you have no clue what you are talking about. I have been as sever a McCain critic as anyone and even I can see the hatchet job ABC attempted on Palin
First of all, VP Office holder do not make policies.
"most powerful offices in the nation?"...dude get off of that cheap booze, try some good brands!
Which no one here has done. Another one of your typical fraudulent straw men argument. Try actually watching the inteview so you can intelligently comment on a thread of a change.
“The double-standard Gibson applied to Palin, compared with the uncritical media platforms repeatedly offered to Obama, who has had zero executive experience running anything, was especially striking.”
The double standard was also today on The View. They swooned all over Obama and allowed Michelle to have a list of taboo subjects to talk about. Not McCain...they were ALL on him and tried so hard to rattle him. I was so proud of him and Palin. This will backfire and probably already has. America is watching...and paying attention. What worked before won’t now...it’s called double standarnd, it’s called bullying and it’s call disrespect...but there is less than 2 months and we are surviving and thriving.
McCain/Palin are class....and we will win!!!
Wow you are very hostile. You really don’t need to continue posting to me if you cannot do so in a civil manner.
I'm still seeing it!
I just watched a little segment on Nightline - first I’ve seen it.
Loved Sarah not getting rattled by the Bridge to Nowhere bullying.
And by the way - to Charlie Gibson:
Why don’t you grill Obama the same way you grilled Palin? Subject: “Committed Christian” vs “OK to practice and support infanticide”. I double dare ya.
GO SARAHCUDA, GO!
“Another one in a male dominated field here (with an abusive ex-husband)! I hate that condescending attitude and the passive aggressive (What? I didn’t do anything to her) crap. We’re not stupid.”
Yes, and you’ve just nailed why so many women are crossing over into McCain territory in November.
Tonight Gibson asked Gov. Palin if being selected to be McCain’s VP nominee was “frightening”. When she answered, “No” he then followed up with asking was it “overwhelming”. Talk about condescending!!!
Would/did anyone ever ask Obama (or any other presidential candidate) if being nominated for president was “frightening” or “overwhelming”??? Why ask Gov. Palin that? Condescending, sexist, partisan BS!
” Ive been spoken to with that condescending, Smile Pretty attitude about 1000 times in my life and when I watched Charlie use that voice and that look on Gov. Palin I thought you just lost the women Charlie.”
For any woman who has been treated dismissively by a condescending arrogant jerk in a classroom - in the workplace - in domestic situations - in politics - Charlie reminded them all of those unpleasant moments.
He’s got the act down pat, and it is a definite loser for this election.
Let ‘em keep at it.
I wonder how many more women crossed over after watching him underestimate her.
The funny thing is...he will get kudos and pats on the back at his weekend cocktail parties, but they’ll be scratching their heads in confusion when they analyze the demographics after they lose the election.
nice article
I can’t stand Gibson. He was talking down to Sarah. He is a smug, arrogant jackass and I hope this backfires on him. I started to watch 20-20 for more of the interview but I got so mad I couldn’t even get past the introduction before I had to change channels.
Better a patriotic, loyal novice when it comes to defending America and our allies than a slick, anti-American novice who’d schmooze with and enable our enemies.
