THE HAGUE, 12/09/08 - Popular support for US presidential candidate Barack Obama is higher in the Netherlands than anywhere else in Europe, according to the Transatlantic Trends 2008 survey published yesterday. At the same time relatively many Dutch also view his opponent, John McCain, favourably.

Transatlantic Trends 2008 is a project of the German Marshall Fund of the United States and the Compagnia di San Paolo in Turin, Italy. For the seventh consecutive year, participants in the United States and 12 European countries were asked their views on each other and on global threats, foreign policy objectives, world leadership, and multilateral institutions.
Compared to 2006, the percentage of Europeans who felt transatlantic relations should become closer increased overall from 27% to 31% in 2008. However, there were "significant increases in Bulgaria, the Netherlands (from 17% in 2006 to 26%), and the United Kingdom".
A majority of Europeans (57%) agreed that all NATO countries should contribute troops if the alliance decides to take military action somewhere, and 58% agreed that all NATO countries should share in the financial costs of a NATO military action even when they do not contribute troops. The highest support for contributing troops was found in the United Kingdom (82%) and the Netherlands (82%) and the highest support for sharing in the financial costs of a NATO military action was also found in the Netherlands (82%).
As to Afghanistan, 76% of Americans support conducting combat operations against the Taliban, compared with 43% of Europeans. However, the highest support for combat in Europe was found in the Netherlands (69%).
The survey also looked at Russia. The highest approval in Europe for increasing support for democratic forces inside Russia was in Germany (79%), Spain (78%), and the Netherlands (75%). The highest approval for providing security assistance to Russia's neighbouring democracies was in Spain and Portugal (80%) and Italy and the Netherlands (79%). The highest approval for restricting cooperation with Russia was in Portugal (51%), Italy (49%), the United Kingdom (45%), and Spain (45%).

That’s not good for Obama. We’re electing a President of THE United States, not a citizen of the European Union. Americans never listen to Europe concerning our own destinies and we’re not going to start now.
They’re used to hiding behind dikes, praying for the water levels to subside, and they’re very familiar and, I guess, comfortable with armies invading their country while they wait and hope that someone will come to their rescue.
Sounds like perfect Obama supporters... except for that rescue part.
That solves it then. Let’s send him to the Netherlands.
Yab-a-dab-a-dooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He can set up shop in an Amsterdam window.
It's because there are a lot of Muslims and we all know he loves them back.
Maybe they heard McCain say that the countries that say they hate us so much can do without our generosity.
Yes, cuz the rest of the world has America’s best interests at heart... /s
I’d go get a “F*** THE WORLD!” bumper sticker, but the anarchists bought ‘em all up.
“There are two types people I don’t like in this world, the intolerant...and the Dutch.”
Name one thing that the modern Dutch are known for other than legalized drugs and a city much like ancient Sodom and Gomorrah.
Dutch most fond of gay sex among Europeans, too.
I always thought the Dutch would be more fond of Hillary. I’ve been told that they have a fondness for dykes.
He would fit right in with all the lttle EU bureaucrats. Maybe he should go to Brussels and join the team. He'd feel like he had finally found a home.
Never knew what the heck that really meant - just knew it was negative. Hmmmm......
He finally found a way to get my vote.
