Sarah Palin Defends Experience, Takes Hard Line Approach on National Security
Republican VP Candidate Speaks with ABC News' Charlie Gibson in Exclusive Interview
By RUSSELL GOLDMAN
Sept. 11, 2008
On the anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history, Gov. Sarah Palin took a hard-line approach on national security and said that war with Russia may be necessary if that nation invades another country.
In her first of three interviews with ABC News's Charles Gibson and the only interview since being picked by Sen. John McCain as his Republican vice presidential nominee, Palin categorized the Russian invasion of Georgia as "unacceptable" and warned of the threats from Islamic terrorists and a nuclear Iran.
The Governor advocated the accession of Georgia and Ukraine into NATO.
When asked by Gibson if under the NATO treaty, the U.S. would have to go to war if Russia again invaded Georgia, Palin responded: "Perhaps so. I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you're going to be expected to be called upon and help.
"And we've got to keep an eye on Russia. For Russia to have exerted such pressure in terms of invading a smaller democratic country, unprovoked, is unacceptable," she told ABC News' Charles Gibson in an exclusive interview.

Has anyone here seen Rush Limbaugh on the Phil Donahue program circa 1993? This reminded me of that.
You can’t recognize victory staring you in the face.
Right on! Charlie was obnoxiously arrogant.
He’d be gushing over Obambi if he interviewed him. So biased.
Arcadia you obviously didn’t get what Sarah was doing. Gib was being “glib” and evasive trying to corner her and she was highly aware of it so her answers were to answer with a question which included... Which ones? Be more specific. In other words she was telling him... she was in control, knock it off, cut the crap and lets roll. I thought she did brilliant!! He offered nothing of substance but a bitchy rude man and she was direct and let him know... I get what you are trying to pull and I’m not falling for it. Now if someone wants to twist it that she didn’t know something well.. LOL good luck with that. She did fine. he was an ass.
That being said, she was no push-over and I think after reading the text of the interview, held her own and didn't gaff.
>>It is completely media created. Bush foreign policy would be a real term.<<
I suppose that we should include some “academics” too, but I have not seen the term “Bush Doctrine” in any government documents.
>>But ... most well-informed conservatives know what it is and would expect her to know. That’s the problem, IMO.<<
So tell me what the “correct” answer would be. Seems like the term “Bush Doctrine” refers to a several policies. Gibson seemed to demand that Palin guess which of those policies he had in mind.
Yep, Charlie did his best to lure her into logic traps and tried to paint her as a religious whack-job. Sarah did a masterful job of parrying his verbal thrusts. But on the Georgia/Russia war question, he set her up so that if she answered ‘no’, then she would come across as weak and signal to Putin that Eastern Europe was his for the taking, but if she answered ‘yes’ she was a warmonger. He would get ABC’s headline either way. Disgraceful.
It is like...no, wait....These people DO have hands up their back like puppets controlling their every move. I sincerely believe that liberalism is far more than a mental disease.
Someone with some editing chops should put together a vid of gibsons questions to Palin, and a comparison to his questions to Obama. It’s an embarrassment.
Anyone have a video link?
We need that clip from Broadcast News when Holly Hunter found out that William Hurt was faking his tears.
I agree. Funny how so many of us are referring to Sarah Palin as "Our Sarah", isn't it? That's how I've been referring to her... just comes naturally... so glad she's "ours"! ;-)
Bill has written FOUR BOOKS on Bush and said, "Charlie Gibson is wrong in that one narrow view of what he calls, 'the Bush Doctrine.'
Bill went on to say, "Sarah was right in asking that Charlie clarify what he meant."
Even that old, and I do mean old, liberal Barbara Walters just said, "I don't think there is just one Bush Doctrine."
Walters said this in response to Goldberg and Behar's rampage about how HORRIFIYING that Sarah didn't know the BD and how could she be qualified for the WH if she didn't know that? Oooooo!"
And trust me, Walters is NO Sarah fan!!!
Did you see Bill Salmon this morning on Fox?
He said exactly what you just said and pointed out that he has written four books on Bush and there is no such thing as just ONE, Bush Doctrine!
>>Did you see Bill Salmon this morning on Fox?<<
I had to mute the TV because my wife was asleep, but I read the closed caption text.

Yep, she’s like family already.
Watching the new part now....
Very unbiased piece.
