Sarah Palin Defends Experience, Takes Hard Line Approach on National Security

Republican VP Candidate Speaks with ABC News' Charlie Gibson in Exclusive Interview

By RUSSELL GOLDMAN

Sept. 11, 2008—

On the anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history, Gov. Sarah Palin took a hard-line approach on national security and said that war with Russia may be necessary if that nation invades another country.

In her first of three interviews with ABC News's Charles Gibson and the only interview since being picked by Sen. John McCain as his Republican vice presidential nominee, Palin categorized the Russian invasion of Georgia as "unacceptable" and warned of the threats from Islamic terrorists and a nuclear Iran.

The Governor advocated the accession of Georgia and Ukraine into NATO.

When asked by Gibson if under the NATO treaty, the U.S. would have to go to war if Russia again invaded Georgia, Palin responded: "Perhaps so. I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you're going to be expected to be called upon and help.

"And we've got to keep an eye on Russia. For Russia to have exerted such pressure in terms of invading a smaller democratic country, unprovoked, is unacceptable," she told ABC News' Charles Gibson in an exclusive interview.

Gov. Palin had to know Charlie Gibson would be a snake in this interview. I hope she chews him up and spits him out!

"Obama would NEVER get these questions." He would have gotten them---ahead of time. But if you watch the vid of the interview Chuck the did with him, you'll see a completely different demesanor and a LOT of softball questions. He smiled at Zero, glared at palin. Completely different interview, as we have all come to expect.

If Sarah held serve, as it appears she has, I suspect there won’t be any surprises as this interview unfolds over the next couple of days. The Lefty’s at ABC would want the gaffes exposed on this first installment as it will have the most people watching.

The PUMAs are picking up on the the misquote and the poor edit job.

Yes...and man, do they hate Charlie Gibson! They've said everything we've said here about the interview and more.

Thank you! ENOUGH with the “OMG what is KOS Saying?
Are you kidding me, these people were saying her kid Trig wasn’t even really her child. You expect the media to be fair?

Her interview answers were FINE and she is strong and confident.
Forget the media’s response.

She didn’t say ANYTHING that can be made into a BIG deal by them. Then again, they try to make everything into a big deal to bash her. So stop worrying about it.
Damn, our side is so insecure while the dems are overconfident.

They pulled this same BS on Reagan 28 year ago, yelling that if he gets elected there will be nuclear war. They were wrong then and they are wrong now.

And they still won't admit that Reagan single handedly eliminated the USSR as a threat without a single shot being fired. Brilliant!

I heard a clip of her answering questions on energy issues on the radio today. It may have been from her run for the governorship of Alaska, either an interview or a debate.

She anwered VERY articulately with not an "um" or an "Ah" in her response.

She has OBAMA beat in a debate, not to mention any gasbag VP candidate they would throw against her.

FWIW, Brit Hume’s panel gave a positive review of the Gibson/Palin video excerpts.

Quiet frankly I am surprised at HOW WELL INFORMED she is. Lets be honest, she has been thrust on the national stage just within the last 2 weeks.

Her knowledge is amazing if you ask me. I had never heard of the “orange or peach revolutions” or whatever she was talking about.

She has learned more about foreign affairs in 2 weeks, than Obama has in 2 years.

Don’t worry about the Russia comment. If you read the entire response, she gave the absolute correct answer. Obama only wishes he could do half as well. Heck he didn’t even know Russia had veto power on the UNSC.

WOW. She did Great!

She is going to be a political force to be reckoned with for the next 20 years.

I remember when Regan passed, some on the left were actually outraged OUTRAGED that speakers would dare pay tribute to his accomplishments.

But I really want to see Osama Obama given the same interview under the same conditions.

They could have put him in a "cone of silence" while they interview Go. Palin, and then asked Obama the same questions.

Wooo Hooo! I am happy to hear that. LOL, I have been afraid to turn on the news.

Seriously this election is getting to me. I was at the grocery store last night and saw all of those Sarah smear magazines over at the cash registers and I was so angry that I was twitching and gritting my teeth. My son asked is I was OK and I lectured him for 10 minutes about media bias (he is 15).

I cannot watch the panel anymore if Mort is on. The only shows I have been able to watch are Hannity and Colmes(sp?) and Greta (who has been fair IMO)
