Sarah Palin Defends Experience, Takes Hard Line Approach on National Security
Republican VP Candidate Speaks with ABC News' Charlie Gibson in Exclusive Interview
By RUSSELL GOLDMAN
Sept. 11, 2008
On the anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history, Gov. Sarah Palin took a hard-line approach on national security and said that war with Russia may be necessary if that nation invades another country.
In her first of three interviews with ABC News's Charles Gibson and the only interview since being picked by Sen. John McCain as his Republican vice presidential nominee, Palin categorized the Russian invasion of Georgia as "unacceptable" and warned of the threats from Islamic terrorists and a nuclear Iran.
The Governor advocated the accession of Georgia and Ukraine into NATO.
When asked by Gibson if under the NATO treaty, the U.S. would have to go to war if Russia again invaded Georgia, Palin responded: "Perhaps so. I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you're going to be expected to be called upon and help.
"And we've got to keep an eye on Russia. For Russia to have exerted such pressure in terms of invading a smaller democratic country, unprovoked, is unacceptable," she told ABC News' Charles Gibson in an exclusive interview.

Don’t worry at all. Let her take the tough questions...
its just going to show what a flake Obama is in comparsion, who has been given a free ride.
I thought she did great.
Incredible misread; as was Charlie’s lead-through question. Too bad he seems so stiff. . .and determined.
Agreed, if she handles it well, it reflects badly on Charlie.
But I really want to see Osama Obama given the same interview under the same conditions. He really IS unqualified but the RAT press avoids the issue.
That’s McCain’s handlers fault as well. They shouldn’t have allowed them to do that.
You know, Charlies demeanor really hit me. Ive held exec positions in male dominated fields, and have run across a few arrogant pigs.
This one wont fly!

She was great, but after a while I had to turn off the jerk Gibson with the question: have you asked Obama 1/10 of the questions you asked Sarah, you condescending boob!
The good news is that she said “PERHAPS” so it doesn’t mean like she’s diving into a definite Drop the Bombs mentality. Besides, she can easily explain away that Georgia has been considered for NATO for quite some time.
She says nukular.
That was a hypothetical “if” Georgia was a member of Nato
The PUMAs are picking up on the the misquote and the poor edit job.
I don't think I've seen Charlie so snotty before.
I just knew this would be his chance to pull a "Katie Couric".
I think he ticked her off. She leaned toward him on like I’ve had enough of your BS.
Uh-oh she didn’t knwo what the Bush DOctrine was.
I believe the part about God being on our side and Iraq came near the end of ABC’s broadcast.
Gov. Palin didn’t just “hit it out of the park”.....
she hit a grand-slam home run at the bottom of the 9th inning during game 7 of the World Series!
Sarah is Ronald Reagan in high heels! An American Margaret Thatcher.
This is worth watching for your folks in the Pacific and Mountain time zones.

Um, no.
There are plenty of us now that have been in the workforce at one time or another and have been on the receiving end of that crap.
You guys are all being hypersensitive. She didn’t give them a huge sounbyte gaffe. I’m happy.
This is politics, not Girl Scouts.
I think that she did very well.
I'm awaiting the tough one's that could put Obama into a complete state of disarray such as..."Senator Obama, when eating Neapolitan ice cream which color tends to disappears first?"
