ROBERT SHRUM: The Republicans’ Lipstick Populism
It was appropriate that the Republicans convened in the city named for Saint Paul. For on the road to the convention, John McCain had a conversion experience worthy of the saint, transforming his lobbyist-run, insider campaign into a full-throated appeal to cultural populism. The combination of purple anti-Washington rhetoric and blue-collar melodrama will henceforth be known as “Palinesque.” The question now is whether this hit show has enough gas to run until November.

Will Americans take seriously a pledge to stand for “the people, not the powerful” that doesn’t even acknowledge this central concern? Can the pit bull pay lip service—or merely apply lipstick?

Lipstick, hockey moms, moose meat, earmarks, the “bridge to nowhere”—even McCain as war hero—together offer a brew of identity politics, cultural resentment and knee-jerk hostility to government, all designed to distract voters from the issues that would otherwise define this year’s electoral combat. McCain may be wealthy and house-rich, but unlike Obama, who wears his intellect on his sleeve, he and Palin are not what Lyndon Johnson used to call the “Harvards.” Even Palin’s daughter, 17 and in a family way, provides a cultural distraction, mightily pleasing the Republican base in the process.

The lipstick remark was bad enough but ‘stinky fish’ is one hundred times worse. It’s so bad that decent people can’t even acknowledge that Obama said it. Women heard it though. And they’re remember that he said it.
Yes, but the point of posting this article was to show the term “lipstick” being used against Palin by Dems for a couple of days now, and therefore it makes Obama’s statement tonight intentional and not just, “Oh that’s an old saying, and he wasn’t talking about Sarah Palin”, a bunch a bs.
Shrum is that loud-mouthed asshat who was dictating the Welstone Memorally Speech that Moron from Iowa babbled, out loud on the Amtrak Acela. He is a multi-time loser.
Obama’s ego can’t stand it that Sarah has become more revelant than he is.
McCain is a leader cause he can.

Later in the day, Obama used a variation of the lipstick line, though he was clearly talking about the McCain-Palin reform rhetoric. “You can put lipstick on a pig,” he said. “It’s still a pig.””
It isn’t a mistake. “Lipstick” is a planned meme.
Probably invented either by sexist knee-jerkism, or non-lipstick wearing women in the Obama camp who think this appeals to men they think are sexist.
And they think this tactic will help them

I smell a trap. I hope the McCain team doesn’t make anything of this. I see they are already demanding an apology but I think that is weak. The McCain team doesn’t have to do a darn thing about this. The media & voters will ream Obama by themselves.

He has NEVER backed a winning candidate, NEVER run a winning campaign; his reputation rests on the backs of losers!
