Minus U.S. Money, Obama Team Presses Donors
New York Times ^ | September 9, 2008 | MICHAEL LUO and JEFF ZELENY

After months of record-breaking fund-raising, a new sense of urgency in Senator Barack Obama’s fund-raising team is palpable as the full weight of the campaign’s decision to bypass public financing for the general election is suddenly upon it.

Pushing a fund-raiser later this month, a finance staff member sent a sharply worded note last week to Illinois members of its national finance committee, calling their recent efforts “extremely anemic.”

At a convention-week meeting in Denver of the campaign’s top fund-raisers, buttons with the image of a money tree were distributed to those who had already contributed the maximum $2,300 to the general election, a subtle reminder to those who had failed to ante up.

The signs of concern have become evident in recent weeks as early fund-raising totals have suggested that Mr. Obama’s decision to bypass public financing may not necessarily afford him the commanding financing advantage over Senator John McCain that many had originally predicted.

I guess The One should stop touting his great experience as evidenced by running his campaign.

Suddenly Obama’s decision to not accept public financing isn’t looking so smart.

Obammie donors could get more “bang” for their buck by buying a copy of Nazi Pelosi’s book instead.

0bama needs more money to buy more $7 million Greek columns, pay his 300 advisors, pay off even more “consultants”, and pay 500 astroturfers to smear Gov. Palin.

But I thought his campaign was a sterling example of his executive abilities and managerial skills.

He may have to "down-size" his 300 person foreign policy team.

Just a hunch- this will be followed up in a couple of weeks by a story that proclaims the brilliance of the magical one as he manages to break all records for all time and has refill his coffers.

You'd think the NYT would use the term “federal” money rather than U.S. money to describe public financing.

NYT makes it sound like Obama’s obtaining foreign money.

I think it’s a replay of Dean’s financial collapse last time around, based on Internet contributing. My theory is these clowns report pledges from guys still living in their parent’s basements, who later welsh.

“But the campaign is struggling to meet ambitious fund-raising goals it set for the campaign and the party. It collected in June and July far less from Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s donors than originally projected.”

Hah. They are unaware of their insulting attitudes towards Hillary’s people.

“Moreover, Mr. McCain, unlike Mr. Obama, will have the luxury of concentrating almost entirely on campaigning instead of raising money, as Mr. Obama must do.”

Small, private fundraisers for Obama, time out of the public eye.

“Democratic strategists disagree, pointing out that campaign finance rules impose serious restrictions on Mr. McCain’s ability to fully make use of his party’s bank account.”

Underlying meaning: Obama’s people took control of party coffers with Dean’s puppy dog-like assent. Obama’s people are going to use every last party dollar for themselves, not the down ticket campaigners. Or they will spread a few bucks around not to be so blatant.
