ST. PAUL, Minn. Sarah Palin found some unlikely allies Wednesday as leading academics and even former top aides to Hillary Rodham Clinton endorsed the Republican charge that John McCains running mate has been subject to a sexist double standard by the news media and Democrats.
Georgetown University professor Deborah Tannen, who has written best-selling books on gender differences, said she agrees with complaints that Palin skeptics including prominent voices in the news media have crossed a line by speculating about whether the Alaska governor is neglecting her family in pursuit of national office.
What were dealing with now, theres nothing subtle about it, said Tannen. Were dealing with the assumption that child-rearing is the job of women and not men. Is it sexist? Yes.
Theres no way those questions would be asked of a male candidate, said Howard Wolfson a former top strategist for Clintons presidential campaign.
The sexism charge was hurled with new intensity Wednesday afternoon by McCain surrogates, all women, at a news conference just hours before made her acceptance speech here - a speech in which she said this about the media and Washington elite: "I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion - I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this country."
The tense encounter with reporters showed how McCains team has abandoned all pretense that this convention is about anything but Palin, her résumé and her wildly unexpected ascension to the GOP ticket.
A choice that was intended to shake up the race did so with more ferocity than McCain ever intended.

Call my cynical, but I smell ‘Clinton’ all over these baseless attacks against Palin. I bet there were some ashtrays flyin’ at the Bill and Hillary house last night!!! Sarah just upset Hillary’s life long plan.
Exactly what Glenn Beck and Rush predicted.
Hillary's got to make sure Obama loses or she'll never get another shot at the White House. 2012 is her last chance.
Hillery want the first all female presidential race in 2012.
It isn’t sexist....Sarah Palin is a conservative and therefore isn’t a minority to be defined by her gender. i thought we all knew this. As far as her family goes, her children are fair game as part of her resume as her family values. /sarc
The leftists and media have sunk to a new low
I see it as her wringing her hands as this other usurper has taken her “rightful” place away from her. I see her as more of a supporter of Palin than a detractor because this will allow Hillary a run in 2012 when Hussein gets rocked this round!
Of course, “sexism” is not the issue here. The issue is whether Osama’s minions are doing the sliming and he is disingenuously telling them not to or is Hillary behind the sliming while having her minions claim that it is “sexist”. I suppose other combinations and permutations of those formulae exist also but “sexism” is a non-issue here.
I couldn’t get to the rest of the story. Does it happen to mention where the heck Hillary is this week?
I'm not so sure about that. I would suggest that the MSM and other angry liberals used Clintonian tactics against Hillary, and have now turned their rage onto Palin.
They never anticipated waking the sleeping giant of good, decent people. The drive-by mud slingers are in a heap of trouble now. I foresee a landslide election Nov. 4.
In the event of a McCain victory, he had better involve Palin very visibly in his administration from day one.
Not just photo opportunities and state funerals, but specific policy initiatives - like a DOE taskforce that actually does stuff.
Sending her to meet with foreign prime ministers - not heads of state but prime ministers.
Lots of trips to Iraq and Afghanistan to meet with appreciative troops.
Tough foreign policy speeches delivered on behalf of the administration on foreign soil - televised globally.
Really step it up.
With Edwards zeroed out, Kerry finished, Gore done, Obama sent packing, Senator Clinton is the last person on the bench - and a loss in 2012 would finish her.
Careful positioning now could lead to four more GOP administrations tomorrow.
That having been accomplished, they'll back off and be as pious and self righteous as they always are. No one with any authority will call them to account. And my blood pressure will continue to skyrocket.
I can’t say the word media without uttering the word sexist first!
I don't think so. If Obama wins the election Hillary's chance to ever be president are over.
The Dem party and the leftist media are totally to the left of Hillary. They want to destroy her and Palin too.
I listened to a left wing talk radio during the Dem primaries and they were savaging Hillary, comparing her to Bush and Hitler. These are the same scum who are currently attacking Palin.
Hillary will be working behind the scenes to defeat Obama bin Biden. If Barry looses, in 2012 Hillary will say I-told-you-so and take the nomination. Of course, this will help McCain/Palin this time around.
I'd like to see the Energy, Land (Interior, EPA) and Firearms stuff (ATF) thrown her way.
Hiilary is mad because she’ll never be #1. She’ll always be #2 (a loser).
If Obama is elected, Senator Clinton has no shot at the Democratic nomination until 2016, when she will be 68 years old.
She has no interest in Obama's success, and the fact that she got about the same amount of votes in the primaries that Obama received tells her and her supporters that she will be all-powerful in the Democrat Party once he is eliminated.
Most of the NOW gang view the world only through liberal partisan eyes. They can and do avert their eyes when a female conservative is under attack. But these people represent a shrinking and dying segment of feminism.
That vast majority of Hilary supporters view the world only through feminists eyes (we all have at least one in the office looking to be offended) and they are quite pissed off at the treatment that Palin is receiving. Just go to Hillarys website, they are stomping mad over there. Of course if Hill had the nomination or the VP I expect they would be a bit more reserved.
