Over half of U.S. voters (51%) think reporters are trying to hurt Sarah Palin with their news coverage, and 24% say those stories make them more likely to vote for Republican presidential candidate John McCain in November.
Thirty-nine percent (39%) also believe the GOP vice presidential nominee has better experience to be president of the United States than Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.
But 49% give Obama the edge on experience, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey taken before Palin's historic speech Wednesday night to the Republican National Convention.
While Republicans and Democrats predictably favor their party's candidate by overwhelming margins, the experience gap among voters unaffiliated with either party is even narrower than the national totals. Forty-two percent (42%) say Obama has better experience to be president, but 37% say Palin does.
The potential problem for Democrats is that Obama, the junior U.S. senator from Illinois and a former state legislator, is the party's standard-bearer, while Palin, an ex-mayor and now governor of Alaska, is number two on her party's ticket.
Palin's highly successful debut on the national stage Wednesday night at the GOP convention is sure to impact these numbers, too. Her speech repeatedly highlighted her experience versus Obama's, something she is expected to focus on from now until Election Day.
Just a week ago 67% of voters told Rasmussen Reports they didn't know enough about Palin, only the second woman ever to be on a national political ticket, to comment on her. Heading into last night's speech, however, 52% had a favorable opinion of Alaska's Governor.

Apparently, 49% have no rational hold on reality.
This doesn't really surprise me.
Remember, 50% of the people you meet are below average.
Poll: 51 percent say reporters are trying to hurt Palin
49% are deaf, dumb, and blind.
Ras said the 49% to 39% for Palin is really good considering really no one knew her till last week.
That is a good # for Palin he said.
Last time I checked or even remember, the presidential election was between the two presidential nominees! I find it interesting that the media is comparing a vice presidential nominee with their Man B. Hussein Obama. Why don’t they compare Gov. Palin to Biden.....Probably because there is no comparison and she is several classes above him but these polls and stats that are being thrown out are laughable because they KNOW that Palin is just the medicine that the RNC needed to bring us all together. I will now vote for this ticket because of Palin.....this coming from a die hard Romney fan and CO county delegate. Give ‘em hell Sarah!

The other 49% didn't have a pulse
Churchill used to say: “If you want to find out what is wrong with democracy, go talk to a few voters.”
I was listening to talk radio and a caller said: “I was going to vote for McCain until he nominated that gun toting, moose eating baby factory. now I am voting for Obama.”
I wondered how VP nominee could push someone from center right all the way over to marxist/socialist. Ignorance on parade? Male chauvinist? Just plain stupid?
Considering these numbers were from specific call zone, it’s not bad. LOL.
I'd like to see them poll Biden vs. Obama. What percentage of honest people would say Obama has the better experience to be president than Biden?
This is further evidence that the drive bys are playing 100% defense right now. McCain's choice has turned this whole election on end. Hang on folks, it's going to be a bumpy (but enjoyable) ride.
“Ignorance on parade? Male chauvinist? Just plain stupid?”
No. The caller was an Obama loyalist, a misogynist, and a liar.
Number would be higher than that if more watched PBS.
It’s time to eliminate “public broadcasting” subsidies, let ‘em sink or swim on their merits.
Lehrer and co.’s comments after Palin’s speech last night would have gagged a maggot.
I’m sure the first question in the poll was: Did you see Mayor Palin’s speech?...to which a yes answer resulted in a hang up.
It certainly is.
They threw every last amount of dirt they had at a nearly completely unknown candidate before she could ever really introduce herself to the public. The Obama campaign has gone so far as to belittle and mock her record as governor in Alaska and Mayor of Wasilla, yet Barry still can’t pull anything more than a 10 point lead overall on experience and a 5 point lead among independents. You betcha that’s a good result for McCain/Palin. Its an outstanding result, in fact.
Jaded Replied: "Considering these numbers were from specific call zone, its not bad. LOL."
I might be inclined to agree with you in that it is quite amusing for fools to make fun of something they do not understand, but I don't.
In a nation where almost everyone is seeking to better their situation, I do not find it amusing that a major political party has managed to lose all semblance of civility.
It is a well known fact that goodness does not sell newspapers. That is why the saying "If it bleeds, it leads" is known throughout the industry. What I do not understand though is how any enterprise whose success depends upon the continued sale of a product would purposefully set out to alienate 1/2 of their customer base.

But 49% give Obama the edge on experience,
***Against Palin? Obviously this is a totally skewed poll if theyre asking about Obamas experience for top spot vs. Palins experience for #2 spot. This whole election cycle is skewed by the media with these kinds of push polls.

That was after three nights of the media beating Palin up and before her speech. The media mocked Palin’s experience and since she is unknown, that is all most people had to go on....until last night.

I disagree. Its a terrific result for our side.
After 5 days of the media constantly bashing Sarah Palin (and the fact that most of the country had never heard of her before a week ago)...and before her speech last night...Obama was leading her by only 10 points on the question of experience. They threw their ABSOLUTE WORST at Sarah Palin...and its 49-39 on experience.
Its even better among unaffiliateds, where its 42-37, merely a 5 point lead.
And all of this before Sarah Palin had really had a chance to introduce herself to the country and to respond to the vicious attacks coming from the media and the rest of the left.
This is a good poll for the McCain campaign. Very good, IMO.

I think maybe you’re not understanding what I’m getting at: The poll is Experience of Obama vs Experience of Palin. It should be Top Dog Rep vs. Top Dog Dem and 2nd Dog Rep vs. 2nd Dog Dem. But they’re going for 2nd Dog Rep vs. Top Dog Dem. The question itself is totally invalid. Of course, after last night, the poll results should start to show Palin in a more favorable light, even with this ridiculous skew. But the MSM is comparing Apples to Oranges rather than apples to apples and oranges to oranges.
