Fecund In Command (Mark Steyn On The Left's Hostility To Large Families Alert)
National Review ^ | 9/04/2008 | Mark Steyn

Posted on 09/04/2008 10:39:38 AM PDT by goldstategop

As National Review's in-house demography bore, I've been struck this last week by the left's fierce hostility to Sarah Palin's fecundity. One gentleman - well, okay, maybe not a "gentleman" but certainly an impeccably sensitive progressive new male - wrote to me from Shelton, Washington:

This abortion prohibitionist hag won’t cut it among women with brains. And BTW she is a good example of reproduction run amok. 5 kids; 1 retard. I wonder if the bitch ever heard of getting spayed.

Each to her own, Mister Sensitive. You can be a 44-year old mother of five expecting her first grandchild and serving as Governor of Alaska. Or you can be, like Martha Stewart's daughter Alexis, a 43-year old single "career woman" hosting a satellite radio show and spending $28,000 a month on "intracytoplasmic sperm injection" in hopes of becoming pregnant. Every woman has the "right to choose" her own path through life, but it's a lazy assumption to take for granted that most Americans find Sarah Palin's choices as freakish as our metropolitan elites do.

What was it the feminists used to say? "You can have it all." Sarah Palin is a mom, and the first female governor of her state. But the enforcers at the National Organization of Women dismiss her as "more a conservative man than she is a woman".

Golly. These days, NOW seems to have as narrow and proscriptive a view of what women are permitted to be as any old 1950s sitcom dad.

For the Left, a family with five children is three too many. Their ideal is none. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming!

The Left’s idea of a family...a transgendered/gay illegal immigrant on welfare who volunteers at PETA, Sierra Club and Planned Parenthood.

As they say, Republicans like the kill taxes and raise babies, and Democrats like to raise taxes and kill babies.

Why the election should be even close... I have no idea!

But the enforcers at the National Organization of Women dismiss her as "more a conservative man than she is a woman".

And the problem with that is what exactly?

Why can't a woman be more like a man?
Men are so honest, so thoroughly square;
Eternally noble, historically fair;
Who when you win will always give your back a pat.
Why can't a woman be like that?

Why does ev'ryone do what the others do?
Can't a woman learn to use her head?
Why do they do everything their mothers do?
Why don't they grow up like their father instead?

I wouldn’t want to have 5 kids, but I don’t begrude anyone else doing so, assuming they have the ability to take care of them.

There’s no “right” answer here- for some people, zero kids is the right number, for others it is ten.

The “sensitive progressive new man” has his own diary at Daily KOS, you can be sure.

The bilge, the venom that oozes from the pus-filled minds of the “progressive” left does little but expose them for the hateful hypocrites they are, and their cherished notions about themselves but an exercise in self-deception.

I know why the left hates large families, heck, families in general. Families are an entity of mutual support and defense, something that the left wants the state to do for everyone, to promote dependence. The Palins full support of their daughter and the new grandchild just makes them furious inside. That’s the state’s job!

Another aspect of families and children. Children teach parents about the parents’ relationship with the heavenly Father. They teach us about disobedience and rebellion and unconditional love. They teach us to not be self centered.

Satan, and his God hating minions on the left, see a huge advantage of taking away this learning about the Father from the individual human.

As a fifth child, I am altogether happy that my parents had five children. Of course, they did not “decide” to have a single one of them...

There are so many cultural distinctions between these tickets they should be hammered home - especially since the Democrats have based their campaign on personal narratives and vague promises of "change."

Barack Obama's personal narrative is that he has been involved in politics his whole adult life, starting with NYPIRG right after college and then on to the infamous Chicago political machine.

Joe Biden started off as a lawyer for a political lobbying firm right out of law school and ran for Senate two years later - he's been a Senator ever since.

In contrast, McCain did not enter politics until after spending 27 years in the Armed Forces.

Sarah Palin spent several years a small businesswoman and a mother before she got involved in politics - and she got involved as a concerned citizen, not as someone who had spent their entire previous life being groomed for office.

For both people on the Republican ticket, politics is a second career - not a lifetime obsession.

Another contrast:

John McCain is the son of a patriot and war hero and his proudly American wife. Sarah Palin is the daughter of a patriotic middle American couple.

Joe Biden may have come from a normal American family, but he has been a Beltway insider for more than half his life.

And Barack Obama? His father was not an America-loving immigrant, but an America-disdaining tourist who was just passing through. His mother abandoned America and only returned to study for brief periods, devoting her life to research and policy work in Indonesia and Pakistan.

For the Democrat ticket, America is a vehicle.

For the Republican ticket it's home.

I cannot fully describe how utterly delicious it is to see these hypocritical gender ideologues so well and truly hoisted upon their own petard.

I have been struck by the hostility shown by the Left to Sarah's belief in abstinence education. The debate about the existence and nature of sex education in the schools has taken place in this country for at least the last 45 years. Back in the day, the debate was about whether sex education should be taught in the home or in the schools. Today the debate is about whether children should be encouraged to refrain from sex outside of marriage. If they are attending a public school in California, it is a given that they will be taught how to put a condom on a banana. Only the abstinence part is negotiable.

This change in the sex education debate is symptomatic of a sea change in America's attitude toward sex. Forty-five years ago sex was regarded primarily as a loving embrace by two people within the institution of marriage. Today it is a casual activity between "friends with special benefits."

What are the consequences of this change? Dramatically increased rates of STD infection among young people, increased divorce rates, more children being raised in poverty, delayed adolescence particularly among young men, delays in the formation of families, smaller families, and in general a more juvenile, less productive, and less responsible society.

What has caused this change? Among other things, the pill and the resulting sexual revolution of the Sixties and Seventies, Hollywood (which uses nudity and casual sex to sell inferior product), Madison Avenue (which uses sex to sell even the most mundane of products), and the denigration of the role and importance of the father by some feminists, the family courts, and once again Hollywood.

Sarah's large family and her belief in teaching and practicing abstinence outside of marriage, are ridiculed by the Left because they are a threat to what has become the status quo in which the Left has become so invested that they are unable to see, or are willing to tolerate, the damage it has caused to our country.

Amen! I also am a fifth child. My mother had terrible back problems after her fourth and doctors advised her against having more, but lucky for me she did not listen to them. After I was born it was so bad that she had a hysterectomy so she could not have any more babies. She told me she would have had at least one more and maybe two if she could have (and she was 35 when she had me!).

Here’s one: 16 children. Dad always worked two jobs, never owned a car, and never owned a home. Mom came from a single parent home - mom only. 3 children have BA or BS degrees. 13 are doctorate or masters level educated.
