I wonder why you’re not addressing my argument? “Voluntary vs. forced” is a straw man.

The argument I made is that “the state > the family” is fascism.

Address that or not, as you like. But please, save your fallacies for fools.

The argument I made is that “the state > the family” is fascism.

Actually it's not. Fascism is forced collectivism through the government. Do some studying. I suggest "Liberal Fascism" and "Road to Serfdom".

You ARE attempting to equate love of one's country, and the VOLUNTARY feeling of duty to do what's right by it, with fascism,

which is just another way of saying "you don't agree with me, so you're like Hitler" - Godwin's Law of online newsgroups/blogs/etc.

And even then, you're asserting something that you don't know, the logic fallacy of "attributing motive", on Palin, by stating that she's putting "the state"

(which implies the power of the state, which is ENTIRELY different than the application of patriotism)

above her duty to family.

That's enough - from my first point above, it's clear you're not equipped with enough information to continue to argue your point.

Well you’re very kind to grace with a reply someone as ignorant and misinformed as myself. And it’s doubly-kind of you to present an argument unadorned with fallacies and insults.

If I might be so bold as to make a humble suggestion to your superior intellect, however: Retrace the discussion which was underway before you interjected yourself, as I have little time and less patience for prolonged debates on irrelevancies and hypotheticals.

(Sheesh. What, do you just search on the term “fascist” and interject your “Fascism for Dummies” spiel? Trace that “state > family” idea all the way back to Plato, who also tried to mask its poison under the guise of “patriotism”. Will we never be rid of such foolishness?)

I shouldn’t mention the women who fought off Brits during the Revolution. Or the Southern women who held off Union soldiers in Baton Rouge during the Civil War.

Laura is the LAST person anyone should be taken advice from. Her life has been littered with failure after failure and bad decision after bad decision. If she wasn’t making money giving out bad advice she’d be trailer trash.

How the Palins decide to raise their family is up to Todd & Sarah. As long as its a family decision and the family is supportive and accepting of the issues that go along with the position, they will get through it.

Although I am glad Palin is going to be serving our country, I see a lot of hypocracy on FR about this. A lot here sound like Democrats, in that it is similar to it is nobody's business if a child has 2 dads, 2 moms, or whatever. I guess our society has become so liberal, that even conservatives are not concerned with children. All I read is 'it's nobody's business', not reasons why her kids will be fine. Nobody seems to care about them.

Except Dr. Laura. She always puts the child first. Apparently she doesn't have many listeners here because it was obvious to me from the beginning she would not be for this from a child-raising viewpoint. If one choses to have children, those children's needs have to come before all other priorities - whether you are a garbage collector or the vice president. I have to agree with her on that.

The difference between the Dems and our VP is that her husband will be raising the children, and has indeed already cut back his working hours to spend more time with them when she was governor. I've read that he left a job making over $100,000 a year and now works seasonally at BP in order to spend more time with his family. Contrast this to the Obamas, where both are working full time. I think a dad OR mom with the children is wonderful - and bless Mr. Palin for stepping up to the plate. He's the best First Dude. A good role model for young men,

Wait a minute, didn't Dr. Laura have a preteen son when she went off to do her syndicated talk show

She worked nights and then later, during the day when he was at school. Lots of moms work around their kids' schedule so they can be home.

Stupid, Dr Laura, really stupid to bite the hand that feeds you.

It's called doing the right thing. Not everyone is obcessed with money. It takes a lot of courage to do and say what is right in the face of opposition. Isn't that why we love Sarah Palin?

I heard this on Dr. Laura's radio show. However, there is a little known fact about Todd Palin’s job. My husband works in the Alaska oil fields, usually those men work 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off. So essentially, he works half the year. Don't get me wrong, they make damn good money for a part time job but they do get a lot of time off.

I do think she should've gotten more facts before posting her opinion. And I read he went from making over $100,000 a year down to less than half that by working part time so he could spend more time with his family. So in essence, he was working 1/4 of the time. What a dad!

I have never ever understood the popularity of a pop psychologist who saves the world between commercial breaks.

Probably because you haven't listened to her. She a little brash at first, but she is a lot like why we like Palin. No nonsense, stays committed to what she believes, and in doing what is right - especially for children. It's a simple moral ground that USED to be common, but now people need to be reminded.

That is an excellent letter and sums up my feelings exactly. (You can add something in it about how Todd Palin cut back on his hours already when she was a governor, and will likely not work at all while in DC. I think that is something she overlooked and needs to address publicly.)

Sheesh, FReepers seem to be losing our minds, exchanging our principles for partisan power.

I think you are the lone voice of reason out there. ;) Well, perhaps not the only one, but you've put it quite bluntly.

I think many are just so happy to FINALLY have a dog in this race (I'm not calling beautiful Sarah a dog!!), that exhuberance is overriding values for now.

Do you know how many Moms we have serving our country right now in Iraq/Afghanistan?

Oh wow. You are so right. Dr. Laura does seem to be very hypocritical when supporting the troops. I mean, she's adamant that a man be in the same city/neighborhood/house as his children if possible - but what about those in the military who are gone at least half of their children's lives? She NEVER, EVER says anything against that.

I remember one call where the mom was asking about her son acting out, and Dr. Laura was very interested in the dad, where he was, how involved he was with his son. At the end, the lady said he was in Iraq - and all that very important involvement was never spoken of again during the call. That's one area I don't get with her.

Hey Laura, take care of your own screwed up son before you judge someone else.

Do we always have to become as low as those on DU here when someone disagrees? I swear, it's getting worse all the time.

Her life has been littered with failure after failure and bad decision after bad decision.

How so? She has a successful marriage, her son is in Iraq defending us (that used to be important here), and she is doing exactly the job she loves doing. (And not that it's important, making a ton of money doing it).

I want to be such a failure myself.

“Well, once you put your hand on the Bible and make that oath, your attention has to be with the government of the United States of America. “

Palin is performing a call of duty, no different than a soldier, I doubt at this point that anyone could fill her shoes and then we would be left with a leftist marxist. DrLaura should think before she opens her mouth, I guess we should say the same thing to all of our soldiers - that they shouldnt go off to war because they have children????

Palin is serving her country by accepting the VP nomination.

That's an excellent idea you've got there.

The most important thing mothers and fathers can do for this country is to raise good families. We FReepers used to know this - right up until Sarah Palin became the Republican Party's VP nominee.

You’re very kind to say so. Thank you.

The irony is that this so-called “family values” candidate is willing to sacrifice her family for “something more important.”

If this nation is in such sorry shape that a wife and mother cannot be spared from such a sacrifice, then all the male FReepers need to hang our heads in shame like the cowardly dogs we are, and bow and scrape before this woman willing to do the job American men won’t do.

And yeah, that includes Sen. John McCain too!

We deride muslim cowards for hiding behind women and children, while we send our wives and mothers off to do our fighting for us. We let our children be taken from us and sent to re-education camps while our wives go to work, sacrificing the well-being of our kids for money. We let our babies be butchered in death factories, and then applaud - “She’s HOT!” “She can field dress a moose!” - a woman running for office who promises to oppose this barbarity in our stead.

We’re not men.
