BREAKING: Sarah Palin "Winged" Her Speech Because of "Broken" Teleprompter
Red State ^ | September 4, 2008 | Erick Erickson

Posted on 09/04/2008 5:02:21 AM PDT by Virginia Ridgerunner

Halfway through Sarah Palin's speech tonight at the RNC, people following the speech noticed she was deviating from the prepared text.

According to sources close to the McCain campaign, the teleprompter continued scrolling during applause breaks. As a result, half way through the speech, the speech had scrolled significantly from where Governor Palin was in the speech. The malfunction also occurred during Rudy Giuliani's speech, explaining his significant deviations from his speech.

Unfazed, Governor Palin continued, from memory, to deliver her speech without the teleprompter cued to the appropriate point in her speech.

Contrast this to Barack Obama who, when last his teleprompter malfunctioned, was left stuttering before a crowd unable to advance his speech until the problem was resolved.

Sarah Palin. Winner.

Lincoln was assassinated!

Nuh uh. He was there last night. I saw him on TV. On the convention floor.

I was impressed that she used hardcopy on the podium, so that she would remain in control, just in case of teleprompter malfunction.

For this to happen during such a critical speech is inexcusable. I would not be sorry in the least to fire those responsible immediately. INEXCUSABLE!!!!!!!

What happen to the good ol’ days when a speaker needed only a small list to outline their speech?

Today's speeches are generally focus group tested for exact wording and usually have some humor which requires exact timing and delivery.

You know, come to think of it, I do remember that instant when she looked down, said "OK" under her breath, and then resolved to carry on, with the crowd cheering her on.

Now that you said that, I think I remember something like that as well. If anything, losing the TP may have helped her more. Sometimes concentrating on too many aids and devices can make a speech stiff and flat. I do think in hindsight she had more facial and tonal expression in the latter part of the speech.

See my post #140

Watched the replay and it appears the first teleprompter sync issue started at 23:12, this is where I noticed her looking at her notes. At 25:12 the teleprompter display is visible again and it is in sync. There were a couple other occasions later on where she was looking down at the podium.

It was an awesome speech, but she didn’t wing it. Unless what she was looking at were just bullet points. I doubt she was looking at the full text of the speech, it would be tough to both keep eye contact on the audience and find the right places on the page. IMHO.

Also donning asbestos underwear.

I will say, at one point the camera showed the teleprompter. My first reaction was that they were trying to show the viewers that she had to rely on one. But then, and this was during a long applause, I thought to myself how does she keep up with that thing, it moves so fast? It didnt even occur to me that it was still moving when she wasn’t talking.

I could detect a very slight waiver in her voice and a change in tempo. Now I know why. Amazing, she kept right on going without a stumble.

I’m sure you two are right. Nobody with any sense would undertake such an important speech without a backup or two.

But she does get kudos for staying calm when the TP quit working. And she couldn’t have read much from the paper as you said, LG, because she only glanced down occasionally. That’s what a good speaker does. (I took a speech class and NOT looking at notes is the hardest part. You have to know your subject and where you are headed cold to do this.)

No matter what - with or without a teleprompter, with or without notes, it was awesome.

Nah ... he's got it all figured out ... just keep saying "change" to any babies in diapers, and "I'm the one you've been waiting for" to any wives or equivalents.

Too easy.

I think I noticed that too, but at the time I thought it was really nothing at all.

Will have to watch the speech again.

Amazing woman!

I bet they (Team Obama) expected her to mess up and when she didn’t, the stage storming occurred by Code Pink.

This makes sense because I had a copy of all the speeches that were sent out early but embargoed and Rudy’s started deviating with more punch. I just figured he changed it to fit the moment. He is a very good speaker with no teleprompter so I figured it was him ad libbing what he wanted to say.

Now we find Gov Palin did the same thing which means she is also a terrific speaker WITHOUT the teleprompter. I am extremely impressed that she could wing it because Rudy has had many years of experience giving speeches and not unusual for him to go away from a prepared speech but to see her do it, puts the Governor in a unique group of people that can keep right on going without missing a beat when something goes wrong with the teleprompter. Not many would have been able to pull it off. The more I see of Gov Palin, the more impressed I have become!

AWESOME — two great speakers without the teleprompter — take that Obama!

Once you Yanks have finished with Sarah Palin, do you think we could borrow her in New Zealand for a couple terms?

It turns out that Mort Krondachy (sp) on Fox was the first to bring this up on that channel. Thank God, Brit Hume softened Mort’s jab by saying that ALL candidates have speechwriters, EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM.

Mort just couldn't WAIT to slam the speech..his was the first comment of the panel, IIRC...Brit slapped that down immediately!

New tagline test.

Hmmm ... I'm wondering what it would be like to be the techie running Hillary's teleprompter, and have it go out.

... the adrenaline rush of fear of ones imminent demise.

No, It was adapted from a speech meant for a man really , it was written in advance, but, since the days that she was chosen they obviously had to rewrite significant portions of it.

That makes it just THAT much more impressive, it really does!
