Halfway through Sarah Palin's speech tonight at the RNC, people following the speech noticed she was deviating from the prepared text.
According to sources close to the McCain campaign, the teleprompter continued scrolling during applause breaks. As a result, half way through the speech, the speech had scrolled significantly from where Governor Palin was in the speech. The malfunction also occurred during Rudy Giuliani's speech, explaining his significant deviations from his speech.
Unfazed, Governor Palin continued, from memory, to deliver her speech without the teleprompter cued to the appropriate point in her speech.
Contrast this to Barack Obama who, when last his teleprompter malfunctioned, was left stuttering before a crowd unable to advance his speech until the problem was resolved.
Sarah Palin. Winner.

Good point.
I agree with that assessment. I've been watching the C-SPAN video (Video: Palinamania). I noticed two things:
- In shots where the teleprompter is visible, it appears to be synced with what she is saying. I may have missed some of the shots so, it is possible that she did wing it for a bit, but each time I noticed the teleprompter text, that did not appear to be the case.
- She has a written copy of the speech in front of her as well (you can see it and he flip pages in a few shots). As such, I don't think you can say she went from memory, per se.
Donning asbestos underwear.
Sarah is awesome! Obama is walking around today with band-aids where is cajones once hung!
This makes a lot of sense. I noticed the points in both speeches. They were only thrown off for a few brief seconds. Supper congrats to Rudy and Sarah. I watched the speeches on Fox but turned to PSMSNBC for the comments afterwards. They looked and sounded like they had been mugged. It was wonderful.
I noticed that also. No ahhhh or ummmm’s at all. I think she’s one fantastic lady. Can’t wait for the debates!
I can't put into words what an outstanding job Sarahcuda did last night.
I think she saved the party whether we win or not.
The only interruption I noticed in the speech is when a commie code-PINKO was escorted out. Whoever let the trash in should be escorted out and have their (media) credentials revoked.
Ping...........
Sarah Palin was looking straight at the center TV camera MOST of the time. The teleprompter aid screens were at 10am and 2pm. I commented about this during the speech to my husband, saying, “She’s not using the teleprompter and doing a helluva job!”
Yes, I definitely saw her bring a written copy of her speech to the podium. HOWEVER, that does not in any way detract from her delivery! She hit it out of the park!
Gov Palin WAS preparted. She brought a written copy of the speech. And it was apparent that it was HER speech because her delivery was brilliant!
That might happen in your dreams but in the real world you can kiss that baby goodbye..
The teleprompter clearly messed up at a point in the speech, right around the comments around Venezuela, but it didn’t remain off.. you could see the teleprompter later in the speech and it was back to where she was speaking and she had the speech in front of her on paper as well.
She handled it very well, and there clearly were problems, but the teleprompter was not out of sync for the entire second half of the speech.
That is not my point. Given what was at stake, it should not have been Governor Palin’s responsibility to ensure that everything was protective of her — it was Team McCain’s responsibility, and someone failed miserably in his/her job.
This should NEVER have happened, and heads should roll.
I am fully expecting she had help.
Governor Palin is an evangelical Christian and no doubt her entire church back in Alaska was praying for her, as were others nationwide.
Also, I’ve no doubt that she, too, prayed at that moment when she made her face. “God, it’s in your hands, help me get through this.” And she did.
I’m guessing that Obama didn’t have anyone praying for HIM last week.
I think if you believe in what you are saying, it is easy to speak without a teleprompter.
If a song lyrics make sense to me, it is easy to remember. If they do not, it is nearly impossible.
I would like to add that Joe Lieberman deviated significantly from the exact text of the teleprompter whereas Fred Thompson did not and Laura Bush was sylable for sylable in reading her speech on Tues.
This is my first post since watching the speech last night.
Let me just say, that a lot of people here wanted her to attack the media directly, and I (and a few others) took a lot of heat for opposing that tack - that she had to be above the fray. I hope everyone sees how damaging that would have been to the outcome of what was, plainly, an historic speech.
It was Reaganesque brilliance. The world is officially on notice.
