New School Year (vanity)
September 3, 2008 | me

As a new school year starts, how often do you hear parents say "I'm so glad the kids will be out of the house" vs. something like "I'm so glad Susie is going to learn algebra this year". If I did not know better I'd say that a major function of the schools is babysitting and warehousing.

I'll admit that neither my wife nor I are willing to give up our full-time jobs, so we want the babysitting. I don't think the public should pay for more of our babysitting through "universal preschool" (which Obama supports). I also think tax credits for homeschoolers, who are providing at home the education and child care public schools provide, make sense. If public schools costs $10 K per year, crediting home schoolers say $3 K a year ought to save money, because fewer teachers and classrooms would be needed.

Instead of all these cuts that are meant to influence your behavior (tax cut for doing xx), how about just a blanket tax cut and you have the freedom to decide what you use your own money on?

The government giving tax cuts for day care, for example, is simply them telling you how to spend your own money and controlling your life.

I always hated that Staples commercial aired at the beginning of the school year with parents happily swinging through Staples buying their children back-to-school supplies. My minx of a daughter knew how much I hated it and would mimic the parent by swinging through the house. But she also knew that I really grieved when it was time for her to return to school. I never understood parents not wanting their children home.

Not in our house.

How did the government get into the cradle to Kindergarten baby-sitting business? What ever happen to familes and neighbors and friends.

The other day I heard Obama say he has been running for 18 months and some of the ladies had babys 18 months ago and now they are starting preeschool...I had to contain myself thinking of my 18 month old in anyone else’s care but my own or of their dad. It was hard enough when they were 5 to let them go.

He wants your kid in govt. hands at birth right out of the hospital if he could have it his way.

Very sad.

Public schools already have the infrastructure and overhead. They need every body they can get their hands on to justify their existence. A tax credit for homeschooling undermines the bureaucracy and is a difficult sell in any district. It makes fiscal sense in the long run, but most people still see their public schools as good.

there’s a difference in not wanting the kids home, and knowing that so much more can be accomplished during the day. it was a noticable difference between when my oldest was in kindegarten last year and when she was on summer break. the house was messier, i had to take more time off to help with kids, etc.
my wife loves being home with the kids, but she also loves a: having the extra time to get things done, and b: that she’ll get the one on one time with our younger daughter to work on potty training, picking up after herself and other little things that having another child around distracts from.

If public schools cost about 10K a year (though actually the true total cost, rather than just the operating cost which is usually what’s “advertised”, is closer to 20K in most districts), then homeschoolers and private schoolers should be credited 10K a year.

We love the start of school! It’s our time to go to start vacations. Last year we went to Niagara Falls, the second week in September. Never waited in a line!

Homeschooling ROCKS!

I think an apology is in order. I totally misread the original post. I could blame it on not having my coffee yet but the truth is I left my reading comprehension skills at home this morning.

I agree with you about tax creds for homeschoolers, and also for private schoolers, even though my kids are in public schools. It's not a fair burden. Vouchers, IMO, would be a better solution; doing away with the Federal DoEd better still. But I'll keep dreaming.
