ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) -- Key evangelical leaders rallied to Sarah Palin's support Monday amid news that her 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, was having a child.
Sarah Palin confirmed Monday that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant.
"Before, they were excited about her, with the Down syndrome baby," conservative, anti-tax activist Grover Norquist said. "But now with this, they are over the moon. It reinforces the fact that this family lives its pro-life values."
Palin and John McCain oppose abortion and have supported promoting abstinence in schools -- which would seem to make Bristol Palin's pregnancy an inconveniently timed development.
But she is keeping the child, a fact that could make the Alaska governor -- whose candidacy has been enthusiastically embraced by evangelicals who regard her as one of their own -- even more popular among that key GOP voting bloc. Watch more on Palin's announcement »
"Fortunately, Bristol is following her mother and father's example of choosing life in the midst of a difficult situation," Family Research Council president Tony Perkins said. "We are committed to praying for Bristol and her husband-to-be and the entire Palin family as they walk through a very private matter in the eyes of the public."
Evangelical leader Richard Land also backed Palin completely.
"This is the pro-life choice. The fact that people will criticize her for this shows the astounding extent to which the secular critics of the pro-life movement just don't get it," Land said in a statement.

Ref Post #18: That is GREAT.
“You cant make your childrens choices for them. Kids will make mistakes. It is good that Bristol could go to her parents and didnt feel the need to sneak off and get an abortion.”
Agreed 100%. I am of the opinion though that this reflects neither positively nor negatively on the candidate. I think the daughter looks irresponsible but that the media is reaching in a disgusting fashion to blame the mother for the daughter’s judgment and to cast aspersions on her values because of this.
“What does the school the girl attends teach? “
Good point.
Ref. Post #15: THAT IS EXCELLENT!!!
Bless you, Hildy. A good reminder for us all.
No. What it proves is that if you let the OTHER side into the public schools you are no longer teaching abstinence only. Not to mention the targeting of young people regarding sex and the option to “erase your ‘mostake’ by murdering a child” in today’s society.
You're right. The libs don't get it.
They think Conservatives will throw Sarah and her family under the bus because of the mistake of Sarah's daughter. They don't understand that we don't care about the mistake. Conservatives care about how this mistake is handled.
I wish I could personally tell Sarah Palin and her family how very proud we all are of them. They are amazing people and John McCain could not have made a better choice!
No, nor I. But mistakes, foolishness, unthinking actions are all part of the human condition, and how the consequences are handled is often the more important indication of character.
When she speaks on Wednesday it is safe to say that the number of people watching will be huge.
I don’t see why this is a surprise, Evangelicals are not some sort of monsters, life happens, it is how you deal with it that matters the most not “gotcha”.
I thought Grover Norquist was a Muslum, not a Christian evangelical,,,,,,,,,,
That is the stupidest MSM statement I have seen in some time, and that says a lot.
What the MSM doesn't get is that these figures articulate values those voters already espouse. While these spokespeople have well-deserved reputations for being skilled at navigating political waters, they no more shaped voter opinion on this issue than they did on the issue of the Governor and Todd's welcoming Trig into the world.
Richard Land is right when he says the pro-life movement's secular critics just don't get it.
Neither does the MSM.
Sorry, but I think I mis-read your post. I think we agree.
I'm shocked and surprised that some around here are shocked and surprised.
This non-story has wall-to-wall FReeper coverage.
Imagine if Chelsea Clinton shows up on Fox News Wednesday night ... and explains first that children need to be left alone during political campaigns... second that children don’t always do what their parents say... and third proves it by announcing her endorsement of McCain/Palin.
Isn't he glad his mother chose LIFE?
Cheers!
Oh my - that is absolutely hysterically outrageous. That would be the best bumper sticker ever, except I don’t think Obama WANTS to kill babies; he just thinks it’s okay.
Well said.
McCain/Palin 2008!!!!
But, WILL SHE BE SPEAKIG WEDNESDAY NIGHT? Or will the Convention be cancelled because of Hurricane Gustav?
Whited sepulchres... we had a lot of them in the church I grew up in. (there's not so many to be found at our new "bible thumping" church home). Ever notice how so many lefty talking heads have the same tone and sense of outrage when they talk about conservatives and/or Republicans? They are doctrinaire "church ladies" - including the males - themselves... they simply belong to the First Reformed Church of Almighty Marx, whose denominational discipline makes John Calvin's brand look positively laid-back.
