Evangelicals rally behind Palin after pregnancy news

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) -- Key evangelical leaders rallied to Sarah Palin's support Monday amid news that her 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, was having a child.

Sarah Palin confirmed Monday that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant.

"Before, they were excited about her, with the Down syndrome baby," conservative, anti-tax activist Grover Norquist said. "But now with this, they are over the moon. It reinforces the fact that this family lives its pro-life values."

Palin and John McCain oppose abortion and have supported promoting abstinence in schools -- which would seem to make Bristol Palin's pregnancy an inconveniently timed development.

But she is keeping the child, a fact that could make the Alaska governor -- whose candidacy has been enthusiastically embraced by evangelicals who regard her as one of their own -- even more popular among that key GOP voting bloc. Watch more on Palin's announcement »

"Fortunately, Bristol is following her mother and father's example of choosing life in the midst of a difficult situation," Family Research Council president Tony Perkins said. "We are committed to praying for Bristol and her husband-to-be and the entire Palin family as they walk through a very private matter in the eyes of the public."

Evangelical leader Richard Land also backed Palin completely.

"This is the pro-life choice. The fact that people will criticize her for this shows the astounding extent to which the secular critics of the pro-life movement just don't get it," Land said in a statement.

The libs are speechless, this does not compute, and they are blowing up.

They don't grasp that they are insulting our girl. You don't mess with our girl.

I’ve always heard how hypocritical pro-lifers are, because they’ll march against women’s right to have abortions, but the second they or their daughter has their own “unplanned” pregnancy, they’re scheduling an abortion.

Of course, that’s ridiculous... a pro-lifer doesn’t suddenly condone murder when it’s their own baby.

The Palins walk the walk, not just talk the talk. How keeping the baby somehow makes them hypocrites is beyond me.

While murdering unborn babies might be the lefts solution to down syndrome and teen pregnancy, the Palins believe in life.

Here’s what’s going on in the secular world. They look at evangelicals like they are all “church lady” types. Old-fashioned organized church goers who wag their finger in your face all the time. I was guilty of that as well, until I actually started going to a non-denominational church and was surprised by what I heard and what I saw. I loved the unwavering principles, but I also love the grace, mercy and message of love...and that’s something they just can’t..or don’t want to..understand.

This evangelical is rallying behind Sarah.

There’s room for many more, too.

You can’t make your children’s choices for them. Kids will make mistakes. It is good that Bristol could go to her parents and didn’t feel the need to sneak off and get an abortion.

I believe you are right. I have been so upset about CNN’s constant coverage of this non-story. But after calming down and as someone else said “chilled”, I believe this will totally backfire.

> This has to be the mother of all blow up in faces..

Shakespeare had an equivalent expression: “hoist by one’s own petard,” a petard being a small land mine, with the same root word “pet” from which the French word for “fart” originates.

These people are Doing Tremendous Harm. They need to shut up.

The voters Palin is supposed to attract are moderate women who are neither GOP nor Democrat. They Are Not Going To Be Attracted To A Zealot.

Conservatives need to stop tossing ammunition to the left by claiming that Sarah Palin’s focal issue is abortion because That Path Loses Moderates Who Don’t Care About Abortion.

The topics to focus on here are oil. It is something she knows a great deal about. It is something that concerns moderates.

The target constituency does not want a zealot. Don’t help the left paint her as one.

Speaking of which, have you seen Bristol in the coverage today?

What poise and maturity.

I don’t know many 17 year olds who could have their most intimate secrets exposed in the MSM without immediately going into hiding.

She looked very stoic and brave.

The Dhimmis are going to regret this big time (and say it’s all racism that Obama lost in a landslide).

Next the looney libs will be saying McCain selected Gov. Palin knowing her daughter’s pregnancy would unite the evangelicals.

My sentiments exactly. I don’t blame the mother, but she doesn’t gain in my eyes, either. It’s a wash. But it is illustrative of their values that there is no question that they keep the baby and the girl gets married. That’s what happens in moral America when a young one screws up and gets pregnant.

I read somewhere that Obama needed 60% of the evangelical vote to win in November. Seems to me that he is not going to get even close to that if they are clearly rallying behind the McCain/Palin ticket.

Another thing to consider is that all this "preganancy hoopla" is going to drive a huge TV audience to hear Sarah Palin speak on Wednesday night. The Oprah Nation crowd laps this tabloid stuff up and I think that 90% of American women will be tuning in (as well as a lot of GOP men) which could result in even higher TV ratings than what Obama got last Thursday.

If this turns out to be the case, look out! America is going to be knocked out by this woman. Look for the GOP ticket to win millions of votes this week from independents and Democrats who if not for all the "tabloid fuss" wouldn't even have bothered tuned in.

A Piece of good news.

I knew the dirt machines would be running full tilt but what we are seeing is amazing.

They are shoveling anything within reach.

I think they sense their only chance is to stop Sarah before she gains any more momentum.

Something or someone has to cut across party lines and stop this blind hate and madness or there won’t be much left of America to save.

This is good. I think we should stop complaining how unfair it is that they are attacking Bristol Palin. It's time for us to show that we are compassionate to the teens who choose to keep their baby. Unlike liberals' image about conservatives, we wouldn't be judgmental and punish our teens who experience this. It is actually an opporunity and challenge for us. Remember Bella and Juno?

If we want, we can start writing in 'commentaries' after news stories and get our messages out.

All of us endeavor to raise our children, as closely as we can, according to our value system. But, final analysis:

We can’t be with out children 24/7 and kids do stupid things.

So much for the nasty rumor that Sarah faked a pregnancy to cover for Bristol. Trig is 4 months old and Bristol is 5 months pregnant.
