Clashes between protesters, police continue

The National Guard was called to assist with crowd control downtown

Thousands of antiwar demonstrators marched today from the State Capitol to the site of the Republican National Convention, despite the big-name cancellations and amid a smattering of protest actions that led to arrests and some property damage in St. Paul.

Scattered clashes between protesters and police continued into the evening. The National Guard has been called out to assist.

At about 3 p.m. at the request of the St. Paul Police Department, 150 Minnesota Army National Guard soldiers were asked to assist with crowd control downtown.

Press and other demonstrators were sprayed with an irritant, she said.

Bystanders said police were arresting protesters, all dressed in black with bandanas over their faces at 6th and Wall after they tried to block streets and fired paint balls at officers.

There were several reports of tires being slashed on an SUV, a bus near the Garden Hilton and a FOX 9 truck.

"There's far too few people here," said Lennie Major, a teacher from Mounds View. "We should have 10 times this many. This will only be a blip."

In response, the protesters' rivals held up signs that read, "Stop the 60s Juggernaut" and "Victory over Terrorism: Let our Soldiers Win."

The main march group made it from the Capitol to the X in about 30 minutes, and its members were met by the same GOP supporters who were there for the smaller, informal antiwar marchers.

Retired Army Lt. Col. Joe Repya, an organizer of a counter-demonstration, estimated that he had about 300 people with him.

The last of the protesters, their numbers not coming close to matching organizers' hopes, cleared the area near the Xcel at 2:45 p.m. and headed back to the Capitol.

"Here it's totally different," said Sue Jiang, a Chinese national living in Brookings, S.D. "People here don't know how lucky they are." She said she was arrested in 2000 when she went back to Beijing and displayed a Falun Gong banner in Tiananmen Square. She said she spent 25 days in detention.

I wonder how much each of these ‘protestors’ has been paid for their ‘work.’

Arrest them all and hold them, and after the convention charge them and throw them in jail for ten years. Stop the catch and release theater that just makes them consider it a cheaper way of going to the movies.

WTH? Can you imagine if you or I shot at a cop with a paint ball gun?? The cop would return fire with a .45....why arent the cops returning fire with rubber bullets at a minimum????

Sounds like the Kollege Kiddie Krusaders are throwing another tantrum. I guess mom and pop forgot to load their debit cards before the big trip to St. Paul. You can’t buy dope without some money in the old account.

I’m so sick of these leftist, American-hating, bottom-feeding a**holes.

You know sometimes I wish we were more like the communist states these scumbags admire so much and would imprison or execute these morons.

Yes, I said the word execute. May be extreme to some here but I’m so fed up after 8 straight years of these lowlifes protesting everything good about this country!

They’re always real cagey about the sort of ‘change’ that they ‘hope’ for.

One can only imagine.

....so I guess these idiots have decided to protest war by beating on people and burning stuff. What’s next? Hows about having a hot dog eating contest to promote awareness of world hunger?

what does the GOP expect, holding the convention in the Peoples’ Republic of Minnesota?

Or, this could just be strategery, a means of showing the normal people of the U.S. the true face of the Dimocrat Party.

You'd find out when a "President Hussein" appointed his good buddy William Ayers to his Cabinet...
