Canada sends aid ahead of Gustav
Canwest News Service via National Post | 2008-08-31

A Canadian Forces C-17 carrying a military medical team and emergency supplies was expected to arrive from CFB Trenton Sunday to assist U.S. forces preparing for Hurricane Gustav, which is expected to hit land here as early as Monday with a force comparable to the devastating Hurricane Katrina.

The massive Globemaster left CFB Trenton at 12:42 p.m. Sunday afternoon bound for Louisiana, where thousands of people in New Orleans and across the U.S. Gulf Coast fled their homes as Hurricane Gustav barrelled through the Gulf of Mexico packing a punch potentially as powerful as Katrina, the storm that devastated the coastal city three years ago.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered mandatory evacuation of the city of 239,000 and told residents "This is still a big, ugly storm, still strong and I encourage everyone to leave."

Not everyone is leaving though, according to Global National's Paul Johnson ...

"They defy the evacuation order because they're afraid to leave their homes empty . . . or can't stomach the indignity of being an evacuee," Johnson said.

"But most others have taken Gustav as seriously as authorities are warning . . . an unprecedented pre-storm exodus that's based on the lessons learned from Katrina - Get out, and get out early."

The storm evoked memories of Katrina which struck almost exactly three years ago, flooding 80 percent of the city, killing 1,500 people in five states and costing $80 billion.

National Guard troops and aid from across the U.S. and Canada were expected to land in Louisiana Sunday, where the airport was scheduled to close by evening.

"Canadian Forces medical personnel were on board to conduct a mass evacuation and assist U.S. medical personnel with any medical issues over there," Isabelle Hotte, a spokeswoman for the Department of National Defence, said Sunday.

I saw evidence of pre-emptive help going south when I was driving this morning on I-81 south, just north of Harrisonburg, VA. An 18-wheeler with the following written on the back: “Gustave—here we come”

Well, you haven’t watched the CBC and it’s anti-American propaganda 24/7, but the military ONLY can be counted on.

You said it.

Been to Canada, Vancouver is the most anti-American place outside of Berkely. Lots of anti-war posters on every block, and the people are the most depressingly sanctimonious group I;ve ever met.

Love Alberta though. But Toronto and Montreal, they hate Americans.

Well done, Canada.

I hope the aid-renderers from Quebec get sensitivity training
about the French-speakers of Louisiana resembling comedian
Jeff Foxworthy's "rednecks"!
But they are great folks to party with!!!

I’m with max and some minorities here. Canada aint worth the supposed ‘ally” status it deserves.

Visited there more than 15 times in my life for I have relatives there from saskatchewan to BC and Toronto. thye HATE AMERICANS in general, and have a massive inferiority complex the size of Texas.

The CBC, I agree after watching it so full of lies against us, I actually demanded my money back from the hotel I was staying in.

If you choose to live on terrain that's below sea-level and prone
to storm surges from big hurricanes...
you need to get used to the possiblity of being an evacuee
(NOT a "refugee", a term hijacked by Democrats to shame Dubya
and Co. for not automatically giving a million dollars tax free
to each evacuee.)

Don’t think much of the CBC myself, but it doesn’t hold a candle to CNN. You’ve got yours, we’ve got ours.

Go Sarahcuda !!

As a side note, the Mexican Army send a bunch of medics after Katrina.

Spanish speaking N.O. residents said they were big help.

An Illinois National Guard helicopter and crew will head south to help with Hurricane Gustav relief efforts, state officials announced Saturday.

Louisiana officials asked for the helicopter, according to Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s administration.

The helicopter, a CH-47D Chinook, and its crew are being activated out of Peoria. Illinois officials are awaiting other requests as the hurricane bears down on the Gulf Coast. The copter is scheduled to perform search, rescue and evacuation missions, and move critical supplies.

State and federal officials in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama — all of which could lie in Gustav’s potential path — activated voluntary coastal evacuation plans beginning Saturday, with mandatory evacuation orders to follow early Sunday if necessary.

At its current speed, the National Hurricane Center warned, Gustav could strike the Gulf Coast on Monday afternoon as a major Category 3 or 4 storm after passing over the Cayman Islands and western Cuba before heading into the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Back in 2005, more than 2,500 Illinois guard troops and emergency personnel went to the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina, state officials said.
