The talking points are out there. You've heard the stock responses to the pick of Gov. Palin as McCain's running mate. The first and foremost stab is....."
"She's got no foreign policy experience."
This is BY FAR the easiest one to knock out of the park.
Three of our past five presidents have been governors (Bush, Clinton, Carter). Each of them came to the job with as much 'foreign policy' experience as Palin has. Each governorship brings its own set of working conditions. As governor of Texas, Bush had extensive dealing with Mexico which provided some level of exposure to foreign policy. Palin governs Alaska which is surround by water and Canada. Carter and Clinton both governed states which do not border either of our neighboring countries.
So, Sarah Palin has no less foreign policy experience than those three Presidents. What makes her situation different? Is it because she is a woman with no foreign policy experience? Is she subtly being accused of being 'too soft' to gain foreign policy experience?
The next time you hear someone complain about 'no foreign policy experience', consider it a sexist remark.
Palin governs Alaska which is surround by water and Canada.
Doesn't Alaska share a border with Russia? It is an ocean border, but well within both Russia's and Alaska's territorial waters.
????
Carter,GA
Reagan, CA
Clinton, AK
Bush 2, TX
Good point about the "myth." If the democrats really believed in the primacy of foreign policy experience they would not have nominated Obama.
This is all about democrats throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks.
“Is it because she is a woman with no foreign policy experience? “
bingo.
The dems don’t know what to do with this woman.
Go to the PUMA’s site and see what they’re saying.
They are disgusted with Obama for that stupid knee-jerk reaction yesterday that completely did not acknowledge Palin as governor.
It looks like there are quite a number of “reproductive right” supporters who are willing to forego that issue this election because they are so disgusted with the perceived sexism of the dnc.
And Obama is walking right into it. It’s a beautiful thing.
From what I recall, she's the mother of five well fed children. No need for pant suits for her.
That John McCain does have a good eye for women.
And talk about eyes. WOW!

“RUSSIA STEPS UP BOMBER RUNS NEAR ALASKA”
http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/story/358368.html
(Obama would wee wee in his pants if this had happened in his home state.)
“Easy. Neither does Barack Obama, and yet he was nominated for President where as Palin is nominated for the #2 spot in the ticket.”
here is why Obama didn’t sleep well last night.
She is a star.
She is beautiful - she is smart, AND she can point to real accomplishments.
Within hours $3 million dollars poured into McCain’s coffers.
She has more testosterone than Obama.
But it isn’t just about November.
She is young and McCain is old.
Obama no longer is the only act in town and the prima donna is jealous.
” McCain is 72 years old and this woman is the next in line? “
And that is the beauty of it!
They just keep stepping in it!
If it comes down to Palin vs. Obama - Palin wins!
They are swooning because they think they have the next JFK.
We are swooning because we see a potential Maggie here.
Let’s get back to the sexism. Is it just me (I’m male and not a feminist) or is there unmistakable sexism in the criticism of Palin. How can you say Obama has foreign policy experience and she doesn’t? There’s an undercurrent of assumption that she won’t be able to handle foreign affairs because she’s female. I have no doubt she’d stand up to Putin or that Iranian jackass better than Obama would. She has a record of standing up to power; he doesn’t. He has always gone along with the corrupt Chicago machine.
good post.
Her proximity to Russia makes her much more knowledgeable about Putin’s shenanigans.
Can you imagine how much more aware she is of this threat than Obambi?
Sorry, I have to disagree -- What Clinton had was foreign affairs experience. That is not the same thing as foreign policy experience. :=)
Yep, I missed that. I was thinking of candidates who ran while still in office as governors.
Spot on and well worth repeating. Hope the McCain people hammer the Dems and the MSM (I repeat myself) on this.
Woodrow Wilson: Governor of New Jersey 2 years Gubenatorial experience 8 years President Calvin Coolidge: Governor of Massachusetts 2 years gubenatorial experience 6 years President Franklin D. Roosevelt: Governor of New York 3 years Gubenatorial experience 11 years President Ronald Reagan: Governor of California 8 years Gubenatorial experience 8 years President Jimmy Carter: Governor of Georgia 4 years Governor 4 years President Bill Clinton: Governor of Arkansas (2 separate terms) 10 years Gubenatorial experience 8 years President George W. Bush: Governor of Texas 4 years Gubenatorial experience 8 years President
I am relatively sure that there is some amount of interaction between Alaska and Russia regarding fisheries, specifically the Bering Sea. (And probably Japan for that matter, too.)
The Franklin Roosevelt data is especially interesting...
Great stats. Thanks.
McCain/Palin..All change..all the time..
Seems to be some angry (left/dem) feminist sentiment that Obama ran a brutally sexist and racist campaign against Hillary (illustrated in the comment threads over at Talk Left). What worked in the exotic rarefied air of the democrat primaries, though, may be distinctly counterproductive if employed against Palin in the GE.
If I didn't know for a fact that John McCain was a dull conventional fossil completely incapable of asymmetrically imaginative strategic maneuvers, I'd swear that one reason he put Palin out there was to bait Obama into doing something tactically stupid.
