The July firing of Alaska Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan by Gov. Sarah Palin, who was announced as John McCain's running mate on Friday, has unearthed a stream of soap-opera-like details about Palin, her husband, her family and top state appointees. The controversy has also cut against Palin's reputation for holding an ethical line and standing up to colleagues in the Republican Party over matters of principle.
Monegan, 57, a respected former chief of the Anchorage Police Department, said in an interview with The Washington Post's James V. Grimaldi on Friday that the governor repeatedly brought up the topic of her ex-brother-in-law, Michael Wooten, after Monegan became the state's commissioner of public safety in December 2006. Palin's husband, Todd, met with Monegan and presented a dossier of information about Wooten, who was going through a bitter custody battle with Palin's sister, Molly. Monegan also said Sarah Palin sent him e-mails on the subject, but Monegan declined to disclose them, saying he planned to give them to a legislative investigator looking into the matter.
Palin initially denied that she or anyone in her administration had ever pressured Monegan to fire the trooper, but this summer acknowledged more than a half a dozen contacts over the matter, including one phone call from a Palin administration official to a state police lieutenant. The call was recorded and was released by Palin's office this month. Todd Palin told a television reporter in Alaska that he did meet with Monegan, but said he was just "informing" Monegan about the issue, not exerting pressure.
"She never directly asked me to fire him," Monegan said.

The leftist media is soooo far left, their main office is in Russia.
So if you have blue eyes you cannot be an American Indian?
Both Wooten and Monegan needed a firing
Hey! A little hyperbole don't hurt nobody.
Hope so. But it’s nothing for Palin to be cocky about. If you’re campaigning on the strength of your ethics, you should recognise that this is clearly out of line.
LOL! I wonder though, don’t you think they actually found the load of stuff on Obama and chose to squelch it? I mean, surely the WaPo has a better research staff than Sean Hannity and he’s been hitting these things on Obama for months before Corsi’s book cam eout! I don’t know, my FRiend, it appears the WaPo hide things they should have been reporting and now they are trying to change the subject by going all out for their chosen candidate.
Which means Republican spokespeople will have to take off the gloves and bring these issues up on the talk show circuit. Campbell Brown was mortified when McCain's campaign manager called her out on her bias earlier tonight.
Yes, they vetted this and McCain concluded in favor of Palin.
Only to an old faert like me ...
Sounds like a winning theme for the Democrats: We are the party of the wife beaters. Doesn’t hurt when you have a media giant like the Washington Post to get that message out for you for free.
Only the Democrat Party/MSM could send a suicide bomber into their own campaign.
And that surprises you how? I'm assuming that this was discussed between McCain and Palin before she was named and that she's shown the charges to be groundless.
Sure hope so -- comments on the Compost story page from Alaskans claim she sent correspondence to the chief and then denied it until being confronted only this last July. The paper is hinting cover-up and it does sound like at the very least it will be bad press.
The Democrats in the state legislature are spending big bucks to investigate the whole affair with an eye to impeach her. They can generate a lot of noise but if McCain's crew has not done their own homework, we may in a world of hurt. One poster over there predicts she will not be on the ticket come November. Don't know whether they're drinking the Rat Kool-aid, but hope that's all it is.
The “investigation” doesn’t count since it’s being done by Republicans. I suggest we simply follow the news stories.
________________________________________________
There are two investigations. One is being conducted by an the Legislature. The other is being conducted by the State Attorney General. The investigation by the AG is the one yielding results, ie the taped phone calls and emails.
The Left will support anyone who has a story that can be spun against a Republican. You know the mantra, "fake but accurate."
So she never asked him to fire her ex-brother-in-law, so what is the problem? And did the brother-in-law ever lose his job? From what I understand, the trooper brother-in-law had used a taser on his own son, Palin's nephew. The information Todd Palin brought forward had to do with that behavior, and possibly other abuse charges. If the Palin's had kept silent, and it was later reported that they had known of the abuse, but had not stepped forward, what would the press be saying then? We all know.
I think it was Rush that said the guy who vetted McCain's VP picks was a very thorough individual, and would have made sure this issue was researched completely.
anybody can verify this statement?
“Talk about scared, bitter, and angry... Communism really screws people up in the head!”
That’s the bottom line imho.
They better be careful with their ‘Native American Indian’ crap too...I know a few that would never vote democrat in a million years!
It also brings up the question of Ward Churchill....LOL..WHO HAS NO NA INDIAN BLOOD!!
Actually, I the investigation is being overseen by a DEMOCRAT who stated that “subpoenas were unnecessary” as she is totally cooperating with the investigation as she has nothing to hide.
I should’ve saved her WIKI page from earlier today as the folks at DU are already busy trying to edit it - clearly making it look WAY worse than it all is.
For instance they have taken out all references to what the police officer in question did during the divorce and custody battle (mainly threaten her father’s life, and used a taser on his 11 year old stepson). They took out that he was placed on probation which was reduced thanks to the union. Basically, the reason they did this was to make her look petty and vindictive. (of course)
Please remember that the info. about the police officer does NOT have any bearing on this Monegan dude, but without this information on the Wikipage, they are trying to make it look like she just wanted this cop fired for divorcing her sister!
The smears have begun!
Till I read that line, I thought Cheney was perfect!
