Sarah Palin: The Double-X Dan Quayle
RCP ^ | August 29, 2008, 12:22 PM | Dee Dee Myers

“Not again!” I thought to myself this morning, as news trickled out that John McCain was set to pick Alaska governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. Not again, because too often women are promoted for the wrong reasons, and then blamed when things don’t go right.

Don’t get me wrong: what I know of Palin (which admittedly isn’t much), I kind of like. I don’t agree with her politics. But in her two years in Alaska’s state house, she’s shown herself to be a scrappy reformer, a no-nonsense manager, and a consistent conservative. She’s also a mother of five, which in my book is a sterling test of leadership.

It’s such a transparently political decision, a double-X Dan Quayle. McCain made the decision to double down on his credentials as a take-no-prisoners reformer. But he did so at the expense of the more important qualifications for a running mate.

It’s not political to say that John McCain turns 72 today. That he’s a cancer survivor. That he spent six years being tortured and abused in a Vietnamese prison camp. Those are the physical realities of his life, and pure and simple, they demanded that he chose a running mate who is ready, really ready. That he put country first. Today, he failed that test.

Worse, when Sarah Palin falls short—and I hope I’m wrong but I think in important ways, such as her debate with Joe Biden, she will—some people will conclude that women can’t cut it. That’s unfair to Sarah Palin—and it’s certainly unfair to the rest of us.

16 years in public life

Public life? I love Palin, but her old job, being Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska (pop. 8000 now, but only 4000 then) isn't exactly prime time.

Palin gives a great speech. I hope it translates into an ability to think and speak on her feet in a debate. Biden is a pig. and the media will not give her the treatment they afforded when the big, bad, man, Lazio, violated her space.

It will be more like when the pig , Sheldon Silver mocked the lt gov, Betsy McCoy by wiggling his hips...no big deal. So I hope she's tough and can smack down these rabid dogs.

" Hell, in a lot of respects, Palin is more qualified than McCain is. "

Definitely in the very important area of energy, oil & gas.

Poor Dee Dee, looks like shes fallen off the wagon with McAmnesty making such an EXCELLENT CHOICE for VP.

Expect a LOT more liquor stores running out of supplies due to excessive depression that will be settling in on them.

Reality check: Bush Senior came from behind to WIN with Dan Quayle, and when Bush Sr. lost the next time everyone acknowledged Quayle was the one bright spot in the reelection effort.

AND Sarah Palin is ten times the choice. I really believe, God willing, she can reenergize America in the future.

Be careful there. She made what seemed like an endorsement of BHO's energy plan a few weeks back. Kind of unnerving.

16 years in public life, and a record of going after the big boys and winning. She has a record that puts Obama to shame.

obama spent 143 days in the senate in session before starting his campaign, he has been campaigning for 15 months or about 450 days, he has campaigned 3 times longer than he spent in the senate

How was Quayle a bright spot? He was a non-entity. The people who voted against Quayle would have voted against Bush regardless. However, there's zero reason to believe that he brought any voters to the ticket. The fact that his political career was non-existent from 1993 on suggests that he had no constituency, not even in Indiana.

They don’t have their talking points yet. Watch out for the DNC to roll out every staffer, aide or “advisor” with a set of ovaries to smear her starting tonight and going through the next five days. Inexperienced will be the nicest thing they say.
We know the democrats and they will not allow a woman to have a man’s job.

Excellant point. This should be one of the GOPs main talking points.

Let’s see.....the “drive byes” LOVED Bill Clinton’s speech when he reminded people how the evil wicked mean bad & nasty Republicans said he was too young & inexperienced to be Pres......asked if it “sounded familiar”.....wellll.......does the main stream media STILL think Clinton’s comment was brilliant. If so, don’t attack “the girl” for being inexperienced.....if not, equally attack “the girl” and the “messiah” for the same thing. EQUAL RIGHTS......( they have BOXED themselves in but good....heh heh heh )...

I don’t think there’s a conservative woman on the planet who can match the drinking/driving record of Dee Dee Myers.

It’s such a transparently political decision, a double-X Dan Quayle.

Something tells me Dee Dee is going to deeply regret making such an asinine statement.

I'm not a Republican or a McCain supporter, but I have to say that this is one of the shrewest VP choices a Presidential candidate has ever made. She has everything McCain needs to make Obama look like a wimp.

She'd probably even cleam his clock on the basketball court. In high school she was "Sarah Barracuda", the gritty leader of a state champion, while Obama couldn't even make the first team at a very small school.

and all he does is vote on things that other people have put together.

And its my understanding he generally votes "present" because he's afraid to take a stand on anything.

That's all I had to read right there to know that a hatchet job was coming.

Dee Dee Myers is trying to repair the cracks in the glass ceiling before Palin can shatter it.
