For almost a thousand years the chief creative force in western civilization was Christianity until around the year 1725, when Christianity declined and practically disappeared among intellectuals. Of course this left a vacuum. People cannot get along without a belief in something outside themselves, and during the next hundred years they concocted a new belief in the divinity of nature. By 1730 the collapse of Christianity was nearly complete in England and the nutballs were off and running, writing about modern man corrupting gentle peoples and destroying natures beauty. The Caucasian male, according to philosophers and idle soothsayers of the day, were brutish cads! Montesquieu, Rousseau, Marquis de Sade,Montaigne and Voltaire wrote of total immersion; the ultimate reason why the love of nature has been for so long accepted as a religion. It is a means by which we can lose our identity in the whole and gain thereby a more intense consciousness of being. What was designed to enlarge the human mind and pull mankind a few steps up the hill left another vacuum.
