Choosing Mitt, Not Choosing Mitt
Jay Severin ^ | August 28, 2008 | Jay Severin

John McCain has reportedly chosen his running mate and will announce it tomorrow. It will leak today. Is it Mitt Romney? I hope so, and if you don't want President Obama, you'd better hope so, too - because if McCain does not choose Mitt, McCain loses.

Snip ... internal McCain polling shows that of all people he is considering for VP, Mitt Romney attracts the most votes.

In fact the polling shows a McCain ticket including Romney makes ONE OUT OF FIVE VOTERS MORE LIKELY TO VOTE FOR McCAIN - ACROSS PARTY LINES! (Nobody else scores like this.)

Snip I believe McCain is thin-skinned and hasn't forgiven Mitt for challenging him during he primary. McCain is a liberal and wants another liberal on the ticket - like Lieberman! A big part of my instinct - and McCain's words in the past few days - discourage me in believing it is Mitt. I dearly hope I am wrong. A bi part of me knows McCain wants to produce an 'out-of-the-box' choice - like a woman, maybe even pro-choice woman.

If he does, he will lose, and richly deserve to.ww

That said: I am counting on John McCain's wanting to win. That requires picking a winner, someone who gets you the win: Mitt Romney.

I hope they don’t. I don’t think heads exploding is going to improve the scenery. There are entirely too many oversized behinds around. Some of those would benefit from being exploded (or laughed off). That would improve the scenery.

But whatever our disagreements, most of us here are members of one body in believing that the Dems should not win. We have disagreements, but I don’t want our members to be exploded. I don’t take a charitable view of the other side.

McCain does not have to attract the old Reagan Democrats - He just has to avoid losing them. Obama, will send them running to the GOP.

Do you think a vice president has “control of our country?”

We don’t live in a perfect world. McCain/Mitt is alot better than Obama/Biden.

So true. This is politics. I wonder how people criticizing McCain or Romney or any of the candidates would look under such scrutiny.

One thing I like about Mitt is his conservative lifestyle. In my brief meeting with Mitt and Ann I thought they seemed very genuine, and although a brief meeting isn't a lot to go on, I have met a lot of politicians in my life and some were complete tools. Ronald Reagan seemed nice in person, Richard Nixon seemed awkward. Dan Quayle was a total weenie in person, but I did vote for the Bush/Quayle ticket. Twice. Jack Kemp seemed like a phony. Kay Bailey Hutchinson seemed very sweet but not very charismatic. Bob Dole was a lousy candidate but on the rope line he seemed sincere. I love Pat Buchanan on talk shows but he was a rude jerk in person. These are only my experiences. I can go on. Some of you may have had different impressions of some of the people I have had a chance to meet. Maybe I caught them on a good or bad day, but I think my sense of people is usually spot on. Even if I think the person was a jerk, I always vote Republican because so far it has always beat the alternative.

We have disagreements, but I don’t want our members to be exploded.

After all, we are all presumably on the same team, the team of individual responsibility and self-reliance. The team of individual freedom. I hope we can remember what we have in common and rally around those principles rather than fight about personalities. Lets win one for the Gipper. I say we invoke the Eleventh Commandment starting now. Please forgive my "Dan Quayle is a weenie" remark.

I should elaborate before I leave for dinner...

TN, I believe that Machiavelli was mostly right. I believe that realpolitik mostly works better, or does less damage than any other approach.
Saints don’t run for office. Jesus was offered a principality, turned it down. (And you remember who offered it?)
We don’t have enough good men, but we have good enough men in McCain and Romney (and some other possible veep choices). I’m also at peace with the prospect of a McCain/Romney ticket because they are both seasoned and mature men, who seem to me to be keenly aware of their own flaws. As phony as Romney may be, I think he knows he’s got some work to do in that area, because he’s lived, and because he believes in God more than he believes in Romney. I think if he ever finds himself President, some horrible day, the first thing he’ll do is not sweat bullets, but pray; I don’t doubt his faith.

So they’re imperfect fellows, yes, and they will govern imperfectly. But I trust they won’t make rookie mistakes, which nowadays could be fatal to millions.

Hope that clears it up for ya! :)

Mitt Romney has probably the best shoulders to drop everything on.

You did say that was your impression. He might have been too much of a nice guy. They do, a lot of times, seem weak.

Who? Dan Quayle? No way; definitely not too nice. You should see my autographed picture of me and Quayle. His signature is illegible. It was like he was pissed to have to mingle with the proletariat. I won a ticket to his big donor luncheon. He pandered to the far right law and order types. He definitely didn't seem genuine or cool. His wife on the other hand, seemed like a good egg. Mitt and Ann Romney were both very polite and did not seem phony or pretentious.

Well said. That is what appeals most to me; the fact that they are much wiser than their opposition. The stakes are high. No time for amateurs.

Romney is not pro-choice. At least not anymore.

Yeah I know. I was referring to Lieberman or Ridge. I like Romney and voted for him in the primaries.
