DENVER The conservative group Vets for Freedom is launching a $1.1 million ad buy during the Democratic National Convention, using video of Iraq war veterans to take Barack Obama to task for not giving the surge policy sufficient credit for improvement in battleground conditions.

The 30-second spot, called I Am the Surge, features three Iraq war veterans who served in the surge of U.S. military forces into Iraq: Gabriel Herrera, David Thul and Travis Quinlan.
The ad will run in Denver and Minnesota during the conventions, and for the next four weeks in the swing states of Ohio, Michigan, Virginia and Colorado.
Vets for Freedom Chairman Pete Hegseth, a decorated former Army infantry platoon leader in Baghdad, said in a statement: Vets for Freedom will not stand by and let the incredible progress of our troops go unnoticed by the American public and lawmakers from either side of the aisle.
Hegseth is at the convention to tell lawmakers, delegates and the press about his observation during a recent return to Iraq.
It is essential that our top legislators regardless of party understand the importance of victory in Iraq, the consequences of defeat and the success of the surge, Hegseth said. Sen. Obama has said that he would still oppose the surge if given another opportunity and has pointed to every outside factor but the surge to explain improvements in Iraq. We hope he will listen to the veterans who have served there and support this important resolution for the sake of the troops.
The group describes itself as a nonpartisan organization established by combat veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and as the largest Iraq and Afghanistan veterans organization in America.

Good for them. Now if our leaders would just declare Iraq the 51st state and destroy all the mosques, I would believe that their sacrifice was being honored.

Then why did the Politico label them as a "Conservative" group!
Soldiers? What soldiers? We have soldiers? Did someone tell the Democrats?
Has Obama demanded that the DOJ investigate this group, yet ?
Probably by the end of business today.
This guy’s hysterical response to any type of legitimate criticism is pathological.
“Vets For Freedom is an American political advocacy organization founded by veterans of the Iraq and Afghan wars. Its stated purpose is advocacy of victory in America’s ongoing War on Terrorism, and support of candidates with positions consistent with this goal.”
Obviously, Politico feels that “advocacy of victory in America’s ongoing War on Terrorism” is a Conservative concept.
And apparently, they’re right. :~ )
I hope they decide to run it in PA too. There are a lot of Iraq veterans in and from this commonwealth...and if anyone can turn PA red it’s the Great Uniter. But it would be nice to make sure.
The media labeled the SBVfT as a conservative group, too.
What an ignorant thing to say.
It reads like an effective ad to me. Might be worth looking into their organization to see if they accept donations. I don’t recall which states the article said they were going to run the ad in...but, of the swing states, Virginia sounds like a good place to run the ad. Virginia has lots of military people and the Washington Post already ran an editorial saying the surge worked. At least one of the names in the ad sounded Hispanic so running the ad in states with a large Hispanic population might pay off. A lot of people of Hispanic heritage are very patriotic and strong military supporters. Hope this ad gets lots of air time.
