Georgia and Kosovo: A Single Intertwined Crisis
Stratfor.com ^ | 08/25/2008 | George Friedman

The Russo-Georgian war was rooted in broad geopolitical processes. In large part it was simply the result of the cyclical reassertion of Russian power. The Russian empire — czarist and Soviet — expanded to its borders in the 17th and 19th centuries. It collapsed in 1992. The Western powers wanted to make the disintegration permanent. It was inevitable that Russia would, in due course, want to reassert its claims. That it happened in Georgia was simply the result of circumstance.

There is, however, another context within which to view this, the context of Russian perceptions of U.S. and European intentions and of U.S. and European perceptions of Russian capabilities. This context shaped the policies that led to the Russo-Georgian war. And those attitudes can only be understood if we trace the question of Kosovo, because the Russo-Georgian war was forged over the last decade over the Kosovo question.

So, in effect, we threw the Georgians under the bus in order to establish a drug-supported terrorist state in the Balkans?

The Russian invasion and occupation of Georgia was about controlling the Roki tunnel, not revenge for a country other than Russia losing one of its provinces.

Here in Serbia and Balkans a theory is that West, NATo and US helped destroy Yugoslavia and Serbia in order to control planned Nabocco pipeline trough Balkans.

The Russians couldn't make themselves felt in 1999. Today they can apply military force to advance their interests. And the West has little leverage over them.

My biggest beef with John McCain is that he did not call for the truth when Clinton lied about genocide in Kosovo. Instead he called for the use of U.S. ground troops to fight the Serbians, and thereby launched his first campaign for the presidency. I wonder if he’s caught on yet?

Kosovo is an excuse not a reason.

Russia is out to take control of Caspian oil resources. Georgia is first, Armenia will fold, Azerbaijan will be isolated and the West will be screwed.

Anyone gullible enough to think that this has anything to do with Kosovo is ignoring the realities of Russian history and the global economy. It’s Cold War II boys and girls and unless we loose it’s going to go on for a long, long time. You are either on our side or the Russians side. Get over the Kosovo delusion.

Makes a dang good point!!

In any event clinton started the next war when he bombed Belgrade.

We had no business doing that!

The USA should stay out of the Balkans.

Now you see why we need Oil independence.

A one word dismissal often mean that the person has not thought through their opinions well.

Please be more articulate.

Kosovo is an excuse not a reason.

Exactly right. Even Serbia isn't playing the "Kosovo" card to defend Russia.

I hear your point, but there is small problem with that logic - I do not think there were no plans for Nabocoo pipeline in 1999. I think it was PSG consortium that was trying to lay pipeline in Caspian sea around 1999, but it fell apart because approaches taken wit Turkmens were completely wrong, and insofar BP and Azeri gas is concerned, back then they were not even sure if they were going to build South Caspian Pipeline into Turkey (let alone any continuation thereof), because their drilling were showing very bad results, and back in 2000 I think it was that they were really concerned with feasibility of oil pipeline as well, because the cost of oil at that time could not justify the costs of its construction.

Valerie, Hate to say it but McCain made his name nationally known on the 1999 NATO Bombing of Yugoslavia, in part because he was and is on the Albanian Mafia's payroll, right next to Joe Biden.
