How much Russian funding of the US left is involved in 2008, I wonder. How much action by Russian proxies to push the US toward a pacifist, accommodationist foreign policy? And how much action to push toward a socialist/Marxist state that will divert funding from military and foreign projection of strength to the endless pit of domestic entitlement programs and the strategy of fracturing of American society through identity politics?

Consideration must be made of Russian fears, and each of those fears made a reality. If Russia fears encirclement, she should be encircled. If Russia fears military inferiority, that inferiority should be clearly established. If Russia fears American technology, that technology should be unleashed. . The invasion of Georgia shows exactly what Russia fears at this moment; competition in oil and gas.
Russia marched directly to the sea port Poti where the a gas pipe line meets the Black Sea. This pipe line is a threat to Russian control of gas supplies to Europe.
Russias new found wealth is dependent on high oil and gas prices. What the West needs to concentrate on today is finding and producing new oil and gas supplies. A lower price for oil and gas will produce a friendlier Russia.

Excellent article!
There's a couple of methods to counter Moscow's dictatorial thugs.
"The plans for the resurrection of the USSR are well known to Putin and the present regime and are outlined in the documents of the UCP-CPSU and Communist Party of the Union" [of Russia and Belarus].
-- Oleg Shenin, Chair, (Restored) Communist Party of the Soviet Union, 2003

Dunn's article has little in it to disagree with, but for one item:
"Johnson enmeshed the U.S. in an unwinnable war in Vietnam.."
If we had a roll back president then, we could have won that war. It was winnable. A democrat president did not have the necessary view to bring it about. Its the only fault I could find in the article.
