Sources: McCain May Announce VP Choice Before Friday
Fox News ^ | August 25, 2008

Posted on 08/25/2008 8:52:30 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain may announce his choice for a running mate earlier than expected, sources told FOX News on Monday.

McCain had previously said he would announce his vice presidential pick on Friday and would appear with that individual at a rally in Dayton, Ohio, following the announcement. Friday is McCain’s 72nd birthday.

But sources close to McCain’s campaign told FOX News that his decision may come sooner than that — possibly on Thursday, when Barack Obama accepts the Democratic nomination at Invesco field in Denver, Colo.

McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds diminished the news.

“I wouldn’t much weight into reports that there are windows of possibility,” he said.

Several names have come up repeatedly as McCain’s possible running mate, including former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge and, perhaps, Democrat-turned-independent Joe Lieberman of Connecticut. Also named is Gen. David Petraeus, the incoming head of Central Command.

Okay. I don’t remember her being mentioned anywhere in this thread. But It’s sounds the mot reasonable, so far.

You are right, but we don’t have an option that is good. Both our choices for CIC suck at the immigration/border issue. We have to win that through other means and choose the CIC based on the next issues on the list.

BigSkyFreeper: It won't be a woman. Seeing as how Barry went with Biden instead of Sebelius, or Kaine, or some softspoken liberal, all options for McCain going with a woman are off the table.
I'm inclined to agree that it won't be a woman; my main reason for thinking that, though, is that it might help him a little with Hillarycrats, but would have to be Pro-Life in order to hold on to the rest of his base. IOW, Hillarycrat support wouldn't last long. BTW, loved your tagline:
BigSkyFreeper: There is no alternative to the GOP except varying degrees of insanity
xzins: At the end of the day on VP picks, I'm a pragmatist. Where are you weak and where are you strong? ...1. Petraeus is from New York, and it isn't likely that his presence on the ticket would flip it to McCain. 2. Petraeus is a soldier, and their vote already belongs to McCain.
Good analysis, IMHO. McCain will draw down Obama's support among blacks in the military. McCain needs a strong potential successor as his running mate.
flaglady47: If McCain picks Romney, I should think you would want to leave this next Saturday. Buy your ticket now so you get the best deal. I hear Timbuktu is nice this time of year.
Well put.
top 2 toe red: Carter didn't have three Supreme Court Justices to nominate, either. Likely the next President will. That's but one minor reason to vote McCain over Obama. I'm not willing to go thru another 'Carter' gig just in the hopes that there is another Reagan waiting in the hedges to ride in on his/her silver steed and save the nation. As Rummy said, "You go to war with the army you have."
Very well put!!!
Impy: Obama could be an FDR and not a Carter (in terms of popularity I'm talking about) and then we'd be ***ked. He's got to lose, now.
/bingo
sodpoodle: M. Jodi Rell
Okay, I think you may be onto something there.
Blogger: So we throw away a pro-life, pro-Israel, pro-gun candidate becaue he speaks in cliches? This is the bottom of the ninth guys. We are either going to start putting aside some petty differences and look at the big picture, or we will lose this game - except it isn't a game. It is the future of the country. Folks may not like Romney or Huck. Fine. But at least try not to tear them down. Remember the Reagan doctrine of not saying anything ill willed about a fellow Republican. There was a reason for that.
I wholeheartedly agree with most of that, and I see the point in your first sentence. Chances are the VP will never become the President, and there's only one VP debate I think (my guess is, the plagiarist hothead Biden would beat Huckaboob).
mkjessup: John McCain is the only candidate capable of stopping Obama and his Marxist crew of misfits from taking over the Executive Branch. If you're ok with President Barack Hussein Obama, head on over to DU and make yourself at home.
/bingo
Perdogg: McCain needs to pick a young jewish woman from California who can bring in the MTV generation there is only one person -- Audrina Patridge
California is in the bag for the Demwits; McCain has some cred' with Hispanic voters, but nothing will flip CA, IMHO. As Anatolia and the Middle East comes unglued due to Russia and Iran, Jewish voters will turn out in higher-than-usual percentages for the Pubbie.
RetiredArmy: He needs to save Gen. David Petraeus as a possible SecDef nominee. Just as long as Colin Powell is not in any position.
Excellent idea!
Perdogg: He could pick me!... I am:... Pro-gun... Pro-Growth... Pro-life... Pro-Military... Young... smart... good looking... telegenic... Reside in a swingstate (VA)... Expert on Defense issues... Good on economics... Can make a dec[i]sion
If I could, I'd nominate ya. ;')
Mad_Tom_Rackham: He'd really slam the Obama news coverage if he picked Dick Cheney
I like it because it's absolutely diabolically brilliant -- there's no term limits on VP. Cheney's health and age would weigh against him, and we already know there's an anti-geriatric bias going against McCain. He needs a younger running mate. Maybe Perdogg.
Hadean: I wonder if Condi Rice is being vetted... or would even consider.
I'm afraid that will be the choice, and she wouldn't require much vetting. It would take care of nearly everything on the politically correct domestic spectrum, and leave only the muddle the Russians and Iran have created with almost no consequences.
mkjessup: Put down the Magic 8-Ball. Vote for McCain and keep Obama out of the White House, or be prepared to watch the rest of our Republic be dismantled. McCain isn't my first choice either, but he is now my candidate because the alternative is much much worse. And don't kid yourself, no way in Hell is McCain ever going to appoint Hilliary to the SCOTUS. Bet the rent.
/bingo

matthew fuller: I would like to nominate America's First Lady -- Laura Bush!
txflake: A governor woman.
fieldmarshaldj: We'll see if he does something smart and picks a Conservative or slits his own throat and picks the liberal Slick Willard. Let's get this finally settled.
newheart: Carly Fiorina. Governor woman is gorgeous and smart but lacks experience. Carly covers the business/economics side. But in the end I am afraid he will do the same dull thing that Obama did and go with Mitt... I'd still vote for a McCain Romney ticket, but with deep regrets for a missed opportunity.
txflake: Won't be Fiorina. Might be Hutchinson.
matthew fuller: Might be, come to think of it -- maybe that's why she killed the fence, something that would really thrill McCain!
txflake: I like them both, but K.B. H. may not be young enough for the balance.
txflake: My deepest wish (if a woman): Susan Combs.
Blogger: I think Huck would do okay. Romney would too. At this point, unless he chooses a pro-choice liberal, McCain has the Conservative vote... [Mitt] reversed himself in the right direction.
musicman: IMHO(and in my prayers), I hope McCain announces in Dayton Ohio on Friday August 29th, that he has chosen John Kasich as his VP pick... "Kasich has previously criticized the GOP for betraying its beliefs and failing the country, but he said the party is still the best when it lives up to its principals."
tcrlaf: If McCain REALLY wants to take the wind out of Obama's sails, Indiana Lt. Gov Becky Skillman would be a GREAT choice! Incredibly Smart, telegenic, and considered one of the best governmental administrators in the country! THAT SAID, the voice in the back of my head keeps telling me it's probably Boehner, or Pence...
668 - Neighbor of the Beast: A woman running mate would be counterproductive. He's already getting lots of Hillary supporters all by himself. If they see a Republican woman on the ticket they'll just be reminded of what they don't like about the GOP: women they don't get along with. Moreover, there are lots of Republican women who don't like the idea of a woman president or vice president. And then there's the pander factor.
HerrBlucher: Maybe he will surprise us all and pick FDT. I can live with Mitt but I will die vomiting if its Huckleberry hornpipe.
fantom: I can't agree , Huck , Lieberman , Ridge , Crist , Graham , on and on . There are plenty worse. Hutchison is no spring chicken and no Maggie Thatcher . She carries LaRaza water . Thats why mac likes her . Pawlenty couldn't be commander of the boy scouts , much less the US military . Palin . But the old farts in the pub party could never live with that choice. Although i hear Hillary is looking for a spot on any ticket ..
KJC1: I haven't read all of the replies yet...but I really hope McCain doesn't announce on the eve of Obama's "big moment." Kerry and Edwards did that drunken caterwauling at the train stop on the last night of the RNC in 2004 to try to steal some limelight away and all performances by them aside, the timing looked desperate and tacky.
river rat: I hope McCain makes a wiser decision than Obama. It appears the drowning Obama reached out and grabbed an anchor when he selected Biden... Their ticket should read: Dumb and Dumber
Gator_that_eats_Dems: I would go for a military hero for a VP... 1. Colin Powell 2. Stormin' Norman Schwartzkopf
MeanMachine: I hadn't even heard it before this week, just like no one took Biden seriously until the last minute, so I think he might actually pick Petraeus. Double down on our success there. And the soon Petraeus has a serious shot at the White House, the better.
ExSoldier: I love the FR banner on the sidebar about the choice of Biden gives the Dems a dead cat bounce! Given the rhetoric of the PUMA crowd at this point, I think it makes sense for a woman to go on the ticket, that way it's becomes a record book election no matter which side wins in Nov and neither side wants to be relegated to the "dust bin of history" by a mundane pick if the top of the ticket already has that special cache. I'm HOPING The pick will be Sara Palin, but I'm betting it will be Kay Bailey Hutchinson.
Preachin': I tend to think he would pick Lindsay Graham, who has been in his back pocket for years.
mkjessup: John McCain is the only candidate capable of stopping Obama and his Marxist crew of misfits from taking over the Executive Branch. If you're ok with President Barack Hussein Obama, head on over to DU and make yourself at home.
DemonDeac: Dwight also had incredible name recognition and was the most popular military figure in the most popular war in our history. He could have won with his hands tied behind his back. You can't really compare the two. Most American's couldn't tell you a thing about Petraeus. I still think it would be a very risky pick.
Perdogg: Kasich supported the assault weapons ban after he said he would oppose it. NO THANK YOU!
keats5: Kasich would be great, too. I hadn't though of him.
xzins: I have no problem with anyone voting their own personal positions, and if CP is that for you, then fine. I don't like the CP's isolationist plank, and I think their anti-Iraq war rhetoric does a grave injustice to our soldiers and the truth. The truth is that there were al qaeda ties and there were wmds and that there were a number of other security reasons for stopping Saddam... The only way to vote for Obama is to vote for Obama. However, the math of it is pretty easy. All of the polls indicate the majority vote getters will be Obama and McCain. The more votes Obama gets, the more likely he wins. The more votes McCain gets, the more likely he wins. That is the simple mathematical truth.
militem: No way he goes with Mitt. Obama's health plan is basically RomneyCare on the national level. How can McCain forfit the health care debate? It's going to be Pawlenty... Do you want free-market health care or socialized medicine? That's why I'm voting for McCain.
Texas Federalist: From McCain's short list, Eric Cantor is a minority, young, energetic, well spoken, from a toss-up state and, most importantly, a principled conservative. I would pick him. Pawlenty is also better than Romney, but a boring pick. Outside the short list, If he's going to go with an old white guy, I would pick Fred Thompson instead of Romney. Off the top of my head, other picks that would be better than Romney are Chris Cox, Mark Sanford, Haley Barbour, Sen. DeMint, Sen. Coburn, and Rep. Pence.
Checkers: FWIW: Romney received more votes than Hucklebee.
Owen: First, note that an enthusiastic press of the touchscreen counts just as much for a vote as a reluctant press. Second, note that it's about [Electoral Votes]s, not enthusiasm. It's worthwhile keeping 1% of Texans at home for lack of enthusiasm to attract tepid support from 1% of Michigan or Pennsylvania moderates... The middle wins elections now. The far right and far left cancel each other. So . . . the optimal choice tactically is someone seen as reasonable and moderate.
Mad_Tom_Rackham: Neither Palin nor Fiorina are qualified. Whoever is selected should be vetted against the prospect of being POTUS at any time, but especially in 2012. Neither of these women have the necessary credentials and experience.
moose2004: I like Palin, a lot, but I'm afraid the MSM would never stop talking about the ongoing totally politically motivated bogus investigation of her by the Alaska legislature (one that will completely absolve her in the end). Maybe I'm wrong, but if I were McCain I doubt I'd take the chance. I could support Kay Bailey, no problem... McCain/Kasich would be an awesome ticket.

I was replying to a poster who had said...It took a Carter to get us a Reagan.

Yes. That's kind of a suicidal sentiment. 4 years is a long tine of Obama picking Judges who will serve long after he leaves office not to mention leading the military.

You realize that opposing Mitt for VP means that you automatically hate Mormons right? Can you handle that, being such a Mormon hater and all? =P

Mitt’s supporters calling everyone who opposes him Mormon haters is just as bad as Obama’s supporters calling those who oppose him racists.

Believe it or not, I loathe Huck as much as I loathe Obama. Would I honestly campaign for Obama? In a sarcastic, Protest Warrior kind of way I would. But Huck on the ticket, there is no way in hell I'm voting for McCain. I promise you that. I just can't do it.

As for Obama, trust me, I'm pissing off liberals all over the net. If I had a dime for every time I was called a racist, I'd be funding 527 ads! My fury is directed at Obama, period. But, I am certainly not going to try and tout McCain. I simply can not lie.

I will patiently wait for his VP pick.

RATS and the media is on a fishing expedition. They are trying to sucker McCain with all these Clinton voters into thinking he doesn’t need the right, therefore he will select a Lib.

Even more reason for McCain to pick Govenor Palin. Put a Conservative woman on the ticket and there will be mass suicide at the Clinton compound.
