Presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain may announce his choice for a running mate earlier than expected, sources told FOX News on Monday.
McCain had previously said he would announce his vice presidential pick on Friday and would appear with that individual at a rally in Dayton, Ohio, following the announcement. Friday is McCains 72nd birthday.
But sources close to McCains campaign told FOX News that his decision may come sooner than that possibly on Thursday, when Barack Obama accepts the Democratic nomination at Invesco field in Denver, Colo.
McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds diminished the news.
I wouldnt much weight into reports that there are windows of possibility, he said.
Several names have come up repeatedly as McCains possible running mate, including former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge and, perhaps, Democrat-turned-independent Joe Lieberman of Connecticut. Also named is Gen. David Petraeus, the incoming head of Central Command.

Following the logic expressed by his own campaign’s ad against Obama selecting Biden, he would have to select Huckleberry.
It would take some wind out of the Obama/Biden ticket sails if it’s true.
After that psyco circus in Denver is over he will announce Romney.
I would like to nominate America’s First Lady- Laura Bush!
Since that’s not gonna go anywhere, I would love it if it is Gen Petraeus, but I have very bad vibes about the choice.
I certainly hope not... McCain will only lose more conservative support that way, IMHO.
Cross your fingers:
McCain’s got a lot of opportunities left to screw things up.
By picking Lieberman or some other left-wing jackass.
There is absolutely no reason to announce this week unless he is choosing a woman.

A governor woman.
We’ll see if he does something smart and picks a Conservative or slits his own throat and picks the liberal Slick Willard. Let’s get this finally settled.
Mitt Romney please!
“Following the logic expressed by his own campaigns ad against Obama selecting Biden, he would have to select Huckleberry.”
Why Huckleberrybee?
Dumb Move...reminiscent of A-Rod announcing he was opting out of his contract DURING the 07 World Series...just bad form. Let them have their lib ca ca fest...do it Friday to blunt his speech...better yet...do it Saturday..just like Barrio did...
Tucker Bounds? What kind of a weenie name is that?
It won't be a woman. Seeing as how Barry went with Biden instead of Sebelius, or Kaine, or some softspoken liberal, all options for McCain going with a woman are off the table.
I understand that Petraeus is a brilliant man.
At the end of the day on VP picks, I’m a pragmatist. Where are you weak and where are you strong?
The selection needs to bring something to the table, and hopefully something that overcomes some weakness.
1. Petraeus is from New York, and it isn’t likely that his presence on the ticket would flip it to McCain.
2. Petraeus is a soldier, and their vote already belongs to McCain.
Makes me think of a feminine napkin...???
“Mitt Romney please!”
No thank you. The main reversed himself on all kinds of fundamentals issues from abortion to gays to gun control when he ran for President. Either he was lying to win in Mass. or he was lying to win nationally. Either way I don’t think for a second that he had so many heartfelt conversions on so many issues at such a politically convenient moment.
I mean this guy?

Very good points. And he also would be green to high level campaigning and wouldn’t have much time to figure out how that works.
