Workplace Bullying: Why Women Are Affected More

It's a classic case of mean-girl syndrome, where cliques are formed and isolation sets in for anyone not included in the popular circle. But this is not the playground--it's the workplace.

According to a study conducted last year by the Workplace Bullying Institute and Zogby International, an astounding 71 percent of office conflict cases are women bullying other women.

"I'm not at all surprised by the findings," says David Thomas, professor of business administration and chairman of the Organizational Behavior department at Harvard Business School. "If you think about the kind of bullying that goes on between [women], which is often more psychological, more subtle, more in the form of social putdowns, that's the kind of bullying that happens in the workplace."

Not surprising... also not surprising that the journalism major’s headline accentuates women as victim, rather than as perpetrators. If 71% is women-on-women, that means that at least 71% of all bullying is committed by... WOMEN!

Man’s inhumanity to Man is exceeded only by Woman’s inhumanity to Woman.

I know that one as I work for two women and I am the only guy and I am trying to get out. If I do anything at all deemed wrong, it is like I killed somebody.

Another thing I have noticed, a lot of things revolve around control. I was told once in a review that I don't share enough of my mundane life and that bothers them. There isn't anything to tell. I am probably looked down on somewhat since I am in a good, stable, and prosperous marriage (1st and only) with a fair amount of relative freedom.

I don't take my frustrations out on others, glare, or snap back at people. It has been hard on my nerves this year. I have to survive it for a few reasons. Next year with a couple of problems going away, I am doing some things bigger, better, and a little differently.

I have been pretty much told I am not going anywhere in this outfit since I am somewhat indepent and don't let every tiny thing get to me. I figured that out a long while back and am making my own plans for a breakout.

But instead, some of women’s biggest problems are other women????

I have first hand experience that this is true. I am the BM and Marketing Mgr. for a very successful small company. The engineering staff are all great and operate as highly ethical professionals.

The 7 women that report to me however are a pain in the a$$. I am sick and tired of the constant BS, bickering, and behind the back tricks. It is very nonproductive and cost the company substantial money through reduced productivity, but it is very hard to nail them because of all the PC crap you must adhere to and avoid a lawsuit.

The company pays very well and is extremely fair and equitable but they constantly find things to complain about each other. I am considering hiring the meanest bi**h I can find to supervise and run roughshod on them.

In the alternative I wold consider hiring a bunch of gay guys. Figure it would be a lot less hassle.

I worked in the backroom of a bank’s mortgage loan dept. once. The women were so mean to the men that sometimes I would try to defend them, LOL. My female supervisor hated me and the men still wouldn’t volunteer to carry my heavy boxes - they did it for the mean women though!

When women are homemakers and stay at home raising their kids those control skills are valuable. It keeps the kids alive until they are old enough to help themselves. It takes that kind of interest in detail to potty train, LOL.

"How about if everyone, men and women, get back to your cubicle, treat everyone with respect, and get your work done??????"

I am a clincal masochist; therefore under the American's with Disabilities Act, I am entitled to a hostile or threatening work environment.

My wife works with a lot of women and a few men. She would much rather work with guys she says because they aren’t as much into holding grudges or bullying. Some of her female co-workers are mean, nasty, and power happy.

LOL - I am a woman boss and I don't care about any of that stuff.

Then again, I hate shopping, don't pay much attention to how other women are dressed, have football season tickets, can keep a scorecard at a baseball game and find gossip boring. I've always had more male friends than female friends. And the female friends tend to be the same way.

You have the power to turn things around. Talk to both of them with suggestions of 3 meanings. Don't be PC. Women like a challenge. (with foggily seeming suggestive things to them:) Women where I work know what to expect from me for a long time. No problem when serious product issues come up. We solve problems professionally. Then I go back to making unexpected comments to the gals. Try this approach.

The rule is you must say things that can have several meanings to them and confuse them. It's amazing how fun you can have with them. Don't quit your job.

Men only FEEL four different ways, as far as I can tell.

HUNGRY - They want something to eat.
HORNY - They want...
PISSED OFF - They want to beat something into submission.
TIRED - They want to sleep.

You forgot CHILL - They want to vegetate in front of TV with beer in hand.

Three of the four best bosses I ever had were women.

I also had a co-worker make up sexual harassment charges against me nine years ago because I indirectly criticized her coming in late and doing as she pleased. I was cleared at the first level of investigation, and it allowed me to see the warning signs of another female bully five years later.

Bullies, be they male or female, attack their targets because they know they will fight fair, have consciences or religious values, and won't do anything severely unpredictable. This reverse sexist crap ignores a lot of that.

It’s all because women enjoy a complex and nuanced emotional life.

There's that word "nuanced" again.

Translation: men are too dumb to understand emotions.

You made a lot of points about women working together having problems getting along. I noticed this a long time ago. I think it's world-wide.

You can get a bunch of men that don't even speak the same languages together. They will solve a chore with using the best idea one comes up with. And they all are successfull for the achievement.

Bring back women's Roller Derby as an Olympic sport.

I was told once in a review that I don't share enough of my mundane life and that bothers them.

Good God man, get away from those feminazis ASAP! Your personal life is none of their business. It only allows them to exert greater control over you, hence the resentment. Since you are not forthcoming with said information, they give you a hard time, figuring the pressure will make you cave. Much has been written about the evil of men but this is an example of feminine evil.

I won't quit until I have somewhere else to go. I may not be the brightest crayon but there are somethings even I know.

This is a pretty PC outfit and it seems to be getting more intense.

I have some deliberate vagueness going on about my boring and mundane life these days. I have done some contracting work for a mega corp for a few days here and there lately and refer to it as the "bank job" when I call my wife to discuss side ventures. It is installing/moving/testing PCs and peripherals in a big bank, easy stuff. The project manager there is a great guy.

Some days are better than others and I have given up predicting them a while back.

It’s too bad we can’t use fisticuffs more in the workplace. The political correctness is deadly poison, kills a business fast.
