Fears that Russia might sell advanced weaponry to Syria kicked up a mini-storm of concern in Israel on Thursday.
Syrian President Bashar Assad, in Russia for talks with President Dmitry Medvedev, has been campaigning to acquire weapons systems that include long-range surface-to-surface missiles, according to Russian media reports.
The news of Assad's reported ambitions prompted immediate hand-wringing among Israeli officials and analysts. Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Israel was "analyzing the ramifications" of Assad's visit.

Why is the Free World always afraid and waiting on the bad guy to strike the first blow?
I long for the day when an article reads,”Evil Dictators terrified that USA(Or Israel) will give Terrible Weapons to Free Countries who will kill the Rat Ba$ta&Ds if they move against their innocent citizens one inch”.

I don’t know, but it’s certainly disturbing. I’ll bet Israel is going to take no chances, though. If they see that Syria and Iran are building up forces to attack them, they will strike first.

why would they need to? syria already has all the stuff from iraq

What the hell is Israel worried about. Obama said that little countries can’t hurt you.

I'm beginning to get that last book in the Bible feeling.Me. too. The Holiday from History was short. Between the Middle East, the Russian Bear, and the lurking financial meltdown, I have an uneasy feeling.

The fear is well grounded. The Kremlin is bolstering their cohorts with additional arms shipments, all of them anti-Israeli, anti-American and anti-Western.

Increasing I suspect the liklihood of Israeli action against Iran and Lebanon before robust Soviet systems are in place. And if history is relevant, their local friends won't be particularly adept at using the arms they're supplied. The mideast is a graveyard for Russian platforms.
