Barack Obama bumped into something hard on Saturday night. The nuanced naif of Illinois preceded -- in Paris Hiltons wonderful snark -- the wrinkly white-haired dude in Pastor Rick Warrens civility summit and came up very short.
You can judge how well McCain did by the minimalist coverage in the media. The highlights reported here were virtually ignored in the Sunday papers.
McCain has never been better. His self deprecation, his humor, and his life story turned the back-to-back interviews into a conclusive demonstration that he is ready for the presidency and Obama isnt.
McCain was energized, comfortable and quietly eloquent in explaining why his life proves the most important of qualities in a president: character and core beliefs. Obama -- consistently charming and shallow -- demonstrated neither of those qualities.
John McCain was a prisoner of the North Vietnamese for more than five years. Researching an article four years ago on John Kerrys antiwar activities during many of those same years, I interviewed more than a half-dozen of McCains fellow POWs. Each of them, in much the same words, said I wouldnt be alive today but for the personal courage of John McCain.
That courage was explained, calmly, by McCain when Warren asked him to describe the most difficult gut-wrenching decision in his life.
McCain answered, It was long ago and far away in a prison camp in North Vietnam. My father was a high ranking admiral. The Vietnamese came and said that I could leave prison early. And we had a code of conduct that said you only leave by order of capture.

Its easy to say that when it is hypothenical, but when faced with reality the need for survical becomes overpowering. I have no doubt that McCain struggled more than we can imagine having actually been it that situation and the fact that he held back his need for survival and placed other ahead of himself shows what kind of man her is.
Ouch - I want Obama to be the “defeated DemocRat nominee”, not the “defeated nominee in the DemocRat race”.
Rush Limbaugh ego is too big to admit that. The nomination of John McCain as the Republican candidate proved wihtout any doubt that Rush Limbaugh and many conservative talk radio hosts are much less influential than they think they are.
Yup. Around in circles till he was dizzy and I wanted to slap him. And Obama lied too. The number of abortions has gone down.
When I read this I wonder what Warren thinks of the man he said was “Amazing” and a Man of “Good character”?
And no Warren was not speaking of McCain.
That's an interesting point. Vietnam vets have been so stigmatized, mainly by the left for political reasons, as tragic burnouts and above all as pathetic victims. A McCain presidency would probably help undo that.
Btw, isn't it funny how in 2004 being a Vietnam vet and a "war hero" was, to liberals, the ultimate credential for a presidential candidate? Yet just four later they seem almost totally disinterested in the fact that we have a true Vietnam war hero in McCain. In fact it's not uncommon to see his POW status mocked on the lefty forums. Funny how fashions change like that.
I said the same thing. We have all grown to hate McCain for various reasons......but damn, he hit the ball out of the park in the Saddleback forum.......I'm still sitting here with my mouth open....
AMEN!
Good info, thanks for posting :-)
It is not about ego. McCain had a great performance, but I’m still not sure if I will vote for him.
He has continually cut off conservatives at the knees on key issues in the Senate. His attempting to ramrod through the immigration amnesty when it was clear that a huge majority of the country wants the border secured and lawbreakers sent back home was simply insulting to millions of law-abiding Americans.
He sounded great Saturday night, but they didn’t ask him about Campaign Finance reform, immigration or other issues where he stabbed conservatives in the back.
4-F means that you are not physically fit to serve. You on the other hand seem to fit into Section -8!
I fully agree. The Democrat Party finds itself in a very bad position.
A few months ago someone on FR quoted a poll that asked self-identified conservatives and liberals what was most important in choosing a candidate, the candidate's policy positions or their personal charisma. Overwhelmingly conservatives said "policy" and liberals said "charisma".
The Dem's may now regret their choice of "charisma".
Obama is like nails on a chalkboard...
A perfect metaphor -
I've heard continually from people, as assuredly many others have, that there is something in Obama's manner and above all his recitations that just plain irritates...
Initially, "uniqueness" served Obama well. But the newness has worn off; and what remains is - just plain, increasing irritation.
I don’t have TV and haven’t heard either man speak before. But I watched Saddleback online. Listening to Obama was an eyeopener. And after having listened to him, I was very irritated. Hence the “nails on a chalkboard” opinion. Hesitant verbiage is annoying.
WOW!!!
Radical Feminist pro-abort inlaw:
“I support Hillary, but I believe Obama has the energy to make us not be so selfish”.
You know what “selfish” means to a leftist? Opposing collectivism and the requisite loss of freedom.
With respect, I don't think one can assume he "knew".
Isolated, without privacy, suffering, in control of nothing and no one; not even his own right to exist. The "gut wrenching decision" may have truly been difficult simply because it offered him the opportunity to exert "control" over something...to make a CHOICE that would offer him further choices. I recall being discharged from the Army, and the joy of once again being in control of my own life...well, at least until I got married.
So go vote for the Messiah if you hate McCain. TROLL!
