LAKE FOREST, Calif. When John McCain and Barack Obama appear on the same stage today, they will vividly demonstrate the reach that has made the Rev. Rick Warren among the most significant evangelists of his generation.
He's a megastar who leads the nation's fourth-largest church and reaches thousands of ministers through the Internet and crusades against poverty and AIDS. That globe-trotting work and his successful book "The Purpose-Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For?" puts him at the vanguard of a movement that inspires young, socially conscious Christians.
But his willingness to soft-pedal political issues once central to U.S. evangelicals, such as opposition to abortion, has opened him to criticism that he has strayed from his calling to spread the Gospel.
Today's forum also is a sign of religion's importance in the 2008 presidential campaign, and the emergence of a new style of evangelical leadership on the national stage that is not tied to a single party and has broadened its social agenda beyond that of the religious right.
"This is absolutely a changing of the guard, and it suggests that the new guard of the evangelical movement is able to generate the attention and focus of both parties," said D. Michael Lindsay, a sociologist at Rice University and author of "Faith in the Halls of Power: How Evangelicals Joined the American Elite."
Warren personally invited the two candidates "friends of mine" via their cellphones. His event at the Saddleback Church will be broadcast live on CNN and Fox News Channel and streamed on the Web. It has among its aims "helping the church regain credibility and encouraging our society to return to civility," he said.
It's likely that fans and critics will be watching closely...

This is the best I’ve seen McCain!!!
Did Warren slip him the questions? LOL
Yeah that guy seemed too drooly over OBama. It was a bit nauseating.
How have they guarded against McCain knowing
the questions beforehand? Could they not have
been texted to him, even in a soundproof room?
Or were other arrangements made, which I missed?
Well, not true. I lost my job since I was not tenured yet, but at the same time, I was not a good middle school teacher (first year teacher). It wasn’t my strength, and I hated every minute. So, for now I am going into journalism, something I actually can do well. At some point I may choose to switch to PR/marketing etc. for more money, or possibly teach college journalism. But, otherwise, teaching was not for me, and I will not do it if I am doing a poor job. Anybody who thinks it is easy is crazy. Working in an office from 8-5 is ten times easier than being on stage from 8-3 with only a brief lunch break, plus then working at home at night.
The teacher next to me got fired because the principal just hated her. She had tenure and was with the district for decades, but she was removed due to an “excess” provision in which the principal claimed her position was not needed.
It was not true of course. But, she was able to find a job in the district elsewhere. So, tenure is helpful for sure...but if a principal wants to get rid of you, he can find a way.
Perhaps nobody was officially ‘fired’ because other moves were done instead. For example, I resigned instead of being non-renewed. Why? I did not want to explain on job applications that I was non-renewed. That is really a tough one. At the time, I was planning on still pursuing teaching at high school instead for this next school year since I did a good job with student teaching at that level. I was not going to stay in the school anyway; every day was a nightmare. Quitting wasn’t really a big deal because of that. I did not want to stay because it was just hell.
Regardless, I bet there are a lot of similar moves that may not be official firings, but are “pushed to resign” type situations.
Yep ....that’s what I noticed...the darting eyes.
McCain keeps hitting the ball out of the park, as opposed to Obama, who hit a lot of singles.
I have no doubt that MSNBC, CNN, ABC, NBC and CBS will be claiming tomorrow that McCain was given the questions in advance.
I’m truly impressed with McCain!
I can’t believe what I’m witnessing...McCain means business.
McCain is a much quicker thinker than Obama.
I am going to be very interested in hearing how the Fox Panel sneer at McCain tonight.
Thanks!
McCain is THE MAN
like he confronted Ayres? lol.
Okay, stop me... I’m making popcorn balls now.
McCain is making warren look like an ass...this may simply be the best political work I have ever seen.
And don't call me Frances.
What's not to get excited about, when McCain says something like: "Find bad teachers another line of work!"
Ricky says he’s answering to quickly.
“Do you want to play a game of poker?”
Ha!
“Are you all so gullible?”
Are you so blind, deaf, gullible, and full of hate against McCain that YOU don’t see the enormous difference between what the US would be like under McCain vs. the US under Obama?
Maybe she caught him in an intimate encounter with his boy butler, Reggie Love? Do You think Michelle has come to the conclusion that Larry Sinclair is telling the Truth about his encounters with Obie?
McCain is looking really good tonight.
For a 71 year old he has more energy and personality lmao.
