Romney Still Raises Concerns in Some Conservatives
The New York Times ^ | August 15, 2008 | Michael Luo

Posted on 08/15/2008 4:04:09 PM PDT by Plutarch

On the day Mitt Romney bowed out of the presidential race last February, his supporters latched onto something of a consolation prize that appeared to bode well for his political future: the warm embrace of hundreds of conservatives whose seal of approval he had long sought.

The enthusiastic ovations Mr. Romney received before and after his speech ending his campaign at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington seemed to signal that Mr. Romney had finally overcome doubts about his conservative credentials, as conservatives embraced him as a bona fide standard-bearer for the movement.

Yet as Mr. Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, is said to have emerged as a top contender to be Senator John McCain’s vice-presidential running mate, a vocal segment of conservative leaders and grass-roots activists have mobilized against him, with some going out of their way to block his path to the Republican ticket.

It is unclear just how large the group of Romney detractors is and how representative it is of the broader conservative movement. Many are evangelicals who flocked to one of Mr. Romney’s rivals in the Republican primaries, Mike Huckabee, the Baptist minister and former Arkansas governor whose own hopes for making a repeat presidential run in 2012 or 2016 could suffer if Mr. Romney were named to the ticket.

Indeed, Mr. Huckabee himself aimed a few jabs at Mr. Romney this week, arguing that he would make an unacceptable vice-presidential pick because of his shifting positions on several issues...

Go Romney! Hope you are the VP! Love ya man! Romney for VP! Best choice of all! We’ll find out soon whether McCain makes a good choice in Romney or a bad choice with just about anyone else. Romney will help John win in many ways, financial, political, morals-wise, good on domestic issues allowing McCain to spend time on foreign affairs, fundraising, mailing lists, is the perfect age, can step right in as Prez if something happens to McCain, the perfect candidate for VP. Romney for VP! Romeny for Prez after McCain! Romney is an olympic gold medal choice, to bring up a topical analogy. Anyone else would be a poorer choice and not be as helpful to McCain as Romney would be. Go Romney!!!!!!

I agree Reagan had to compromise. Part of that is our fault, because we (voters) didn’t give him enough conservatives to work with. It’s unfortunate, but I think he had to sacrifice some things he felt couldn’t be achieved in order to obtain other things he felt were essential, such as the military build up.

Imagine what Reagan could have accomplished with a congress that wanted this:

http://www.house.gov/house/Contract/CONTRACT.html

As for Romney, he might have made a Reagan-like conversion. It’s possible, but I’m suspicious. For one thing, he’s no longer governor, so he can say whatever he wants without actually having to prove it. He’s never actually governed as a conservative. For another, we aren’t forced to accept him. There are consistent conservatives who haven’t made recent conversions. Why settle for a Romney.

Norm’s posts are civil and reasonable. I don’t agree with him, but I enjoy a civil discussion. Thanks, Norm.

Thank you. I just can’t find it in me to stick it to Mitt that bad. I’ll be the first to admit he was really bothering me in the primaries. That’s mainly because he was beating my guy and I was clouded!

That’s all over now of course.

Keene is a great lover of Arlen “Scottish Law” Specter as well.

Unfortunate.

RE Your Post: “All the libs I know (I’m a teacher - so it’s 100+) HATE Romney with a seething passion.”

Do they say WHY they hate Romney so much? It’s not the Mormon thing, is it? That seems ridiculous. I don’t think liberals care all that much about the religion issue. What are they telling you about their Romney hate?

I happen to be a solid conservative in case you had any doubt.

If by “#2” you mean I will never go for a Bob Barr or Chuck Baldwin for President then you are right. I vote for a candidate who is appropriately qualified for the office, and whose stature and experience is worthy of the office. Then I pick the most conservative of that group who is electable. I don’t buy tickets to the circus.

Interesting the trolls for Slick Willard that launch out of the blue personal attacks on Conservatives on FR. Well, I guess that’s what you operatives are paid to do.

Scarchy doesn’t like the fact that his boy has been outed as a liberal, a fraud, a liar, and a Trojan Horse Democrat.

Apparently they are personal friends and Keene allowed that to cloud his judgment in backing him over Toomey.

They hate him because, to them, he embodies conservatism.

The point of my post was to rebut the extremists here who hate Romney because they think he’s a liberal.

Romney, an attack dog? More like lap dog. He went after no one in Massachusetts. Big Dig? Nothing. Police Details. Nothing. Fraud, waste and corruption? Nothing. Did he do anything about his Utah friends and hacks and their corrupting that required a half billion dollar bail out? No. Mitt couldn’t get a couple of illegals out of his own yard.

Spitzer had a way better record. Even Cuomo is better. Mitt has no record, ever, of going ‘after’ anybody.

You obviously haven’t been watching Romney on TV lately. The man is articulate and pointed.
