Russian General Threatens Poland with Attack over US deal

A top Russian general said Friday that Poland's agreement to accept a US missile defense battery exposes the country to attack, pointing out that Russian military doctrine permits the use of nuclear weapons in such a situation, the Interfax news agency reported. *** Interfax said he added, in clear reference to the agreement, that Russia's military doctrine sanctions the use of nuclear weapons "against the allies of countries having nuclear weapons if they in some way help them." Nogovitsyn said that would include elements of strategic deterrence systems, according to Interfax.

And... Russia is taking steps towards being more authoritarian, while Poland is taking steps away from being authoritarian.

Same for Georgia, et al.

There are moral as well as geopolitical difference amongst Kruschev’s USSR, Castro’s Cuba, the former Eastern Bloc, Georgia, etc.

But regardless of how you view any moral differences, the U.S. has a strategic geopolitical interest in keeping Russian weak and the bordering republics strong.

I agree. What we need to do is arm potential Russian targets TO THE TEETH. If Russia does go after another one of our allies make them pay dearly for it.

The land-based ABM system slated for Poland is a very limited system designed to protect Europe from a tiny ballistic missile attack. Russia could swamp it, or knock it out beforehand (and they know it).

Sure they know it. And all that Russian noise is not about those 10 interceptors, but about the fact, that after they are stationed in Poland - Poland will become a vital element of the U.S. defense system.
Which means, that if Poland is attacked, then it's going to be like U.S. is attacked.

Which means that Poland is going to get out of the Russian zone of influence forever - without any hope, nor chance to change this situation

And this is what really hurts those SOBs.

Threatening Poland is the same thing as threatening the United States. There is no way we could sit and watch without retaliating by bombing Russia. The Russians are insane.

I would introduce 1 caveat to the “limited ABM” statement that I made. Yes, it’s only 10 interceptors... today. If Iran has a half-dozen IRBM’s that is probably enough. What happens when Iran’s IRBM-Nuke stockpile doubles? And doubles again? Pretty soon you have backup radars & interceptors springing-up like crab-grass.

The thing is — and Putin should realize this — Iran will need to be dealt with before they have any serious nuclear arsenal. Neither we, no the Russians, can afford to allow Iran to go too far down that road. They aren’t building them for deterence...

Arm Poland with nuclear weapons !

No, that would be the wrong move.

What Poland wants is assurance that the U.S. will not cut-and-run and leave them hanging in the future.

And they want some degree of control over the Patriot missile batteries.

Having dealt with Polish soldiers and many Poles individually I’d observe that they are quite capable of taking care of themselves, especially if we were supporting them and they’re many Poles who would quite enjoy the opportunity to kill some Russians.

Nuclear balistic missiles are a far cry from defensive anti-ballistic missile systems.

We would have never embargoed Cuba if they had put only defensive SAM sites in Cuba
