Russian General Threatens Poland with Attack over US deal
Jerusalem Post ^ | 15 Aug 2008 | Associated Press

A top Russian general said Friday that Poland's agreement to accept a US missile defense battery exposes the country to attack, pointing out that Russian military doctrine permits the use of nuclear weapons in such a situation, the Interfax news agency reported. *** Interfax said he added, in clear reference to the agreement, that Russia's military doctrine sanctions the use of nuclear weapons "against the allies of countries having nuclear weapons if they in some way help them." Nogovitsyn said that would include elements of strategic deterrence systems, according to Interfax.

Their doctrine is pretty much that they can attack anyone they wish with nuclear weapons. We are back in the cold war with these mad dogs.

I’m sure the Poles appreciate being threatened with Russian nukes again.

Proof that Poland *needs* Bush’s missile defenses.

Bring it.

The first thing I thought when I heard those idiots had a massed convoy of 100 vehicles heading down a single road to Tbilisi was what a few A-10s would make it look like.

The Russians cannot allow their near-abroad to prosper or expand its military capabilities. The main reason is that their near-abroad is likely to exact a revenge on Moscow that is decades over due.

Its time to stop being a nice guy with these bullies.

Its time to tell them to bug off and any attack on any U.S. allied state will be met with military force.

Its proably also time to re-assess our involvement in Iraq and even possibly Afghanistan in light of this serious new threat from “Putie” and his puppets.

” Their doctrine is pretty much that they can attack anyone they wish with nuclear weapons. “

Admitting to a “first use” doctrine is a line that, to my knowledge, the Soviets never crossed...

This is disturbing, to say the least....

The Poles will not be cowed by such threats anymore.

Russian mouths are writing checks that their asses can't cash.

I think it shows Putin et al have thier sites on recreating the old empire long term, they don’t want any western meddling, particularly nuclear defense shields from the US.

Mother Russia still holds considerable influence over Cuba. I wonder if we should warn them that any attempt to assist the Cubans militarily would result in nuclear retaliation. If we’re going to have another cold war with these commies, let’s do it right and reassert the Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) Doctrine. I never trusted them anyway.

My gut reaction is to want to say that Russia is over-reacting here. But I can’t help be reminded of the Cuban missile crisis. The U.S. reaction to having missiles 90 miles off our coast is fairly analogous to the Russian reaction over this issue. Even though deep down I really want to find a way to criticise Russia over this, I’m having a hard time justifying a reason to myself.

Russia is threatening to attack Poland with nuclear weapons if Poland plans to put a defensive system in to shield itself from those nuclear weapons. What is deep about that ?

The Cuban missiles were aimed at us.

The Polish missiles are aimed at Iran -- not Russia.

Big difference.

Moreover, if I'm not mistaken, anticipating this very reaction, we quietly offered to place the missile site on Russian soil -- knowing that solution would be rejected.

Diplomatically, this is called "bluster".
