Gori/Tbilisi - The troopers of Russia's 58th Army, fresh from chasing their US-trained Georgian opponents out of South Ossetia, are just in love with their NATO-issue loot.
'Check out this war trophy,' a T-62 tank commander named Viktor proudly pointed out to a Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa reporter. 'A real NATO-standard bayonet!'

I didn’t take the poster’s comment as being pro russia. Any conflict with Russia will result in mass casualties on both sides. We won’t walk over them like we did the Taliban and Saddam’s army.
There’s a lot of armchair soldiers, who like to talk tough about fighting. It’s easy to do when you’re not the one who kisses your wife goodbye to fight for someone else’s country.
I know what you’re saying. The maddening part is that when someone like me tries to point this out (albeit, sometimes in a gruff and less than diplomatic way), I am accused of being a “chi-com” lover or told that the Russians will pay one day for what they’re doing in Georgia. It’s not that I support what these countries do, it’s that I understand that there is a heavy price to be paid by those who carry out the fantasies of these FReepers. I realize I’m preaching to the choir...good night.
There just seems to be a more vocal section of bellocoise FReepers these days. It’s REALLY easy to rant and rave from the comfort of your armchair. The problem is that someone has to actually do it (and it’s not the people in the armchairs).

Americans have been kissing their wives goodby to fight for someone else’s country for generations, friend. It didn’t start with yours. Do have a point to make about the discussion at hand? If not, save us your insults.
Hmm...well, looting is, after all, what the Soviet army does best...
See post 27.
Now, friend, do you have something constructive to say about the issue or are you too just going to enjoy yourself throwing around insults without adding anything to the discussion.
That's what I thought, cause these Russians have picked up some chechen tricks of the trade.
Big deal. The government sells them surplus in lots by the hundreds. Usually for about $1.50 each.
Russians dont seem to have a problem with kissing their wives goodbye. Maybe thats the problem.
touche !
this is why the robots are being built
no wives
You really think it’s going to go well for you ChiComs don’t you?
I do now (deploying in December) and have before “kissed the wife goodbye” while deploying, buried a few friends who never got the welcome home kiss, and actually agree with quite a few “armchair quarterbacks” here.
We face them now, maybe not directly (Explosively Formed Projectiles anyone????), but if we delay this it will get worse. Please, and I’m not saying this to poke you in the eye, look up Sudetenland and you will find
- Germany gave passports to German speaking Czechs with historic ties to Germnay
- Manufactured discontent with same
- Rescued said Czechs via threat of military force
- We had “Peace in our time” for about two years and then hell broke lose
If you don’t see the parallels I can’t help you. It’s as if they stole a page from Nazi Germany, circa 1937. Pay now small or pay later big, take your choice. Same as the GWOT, just different arena and players.
And that shot is a picture of the “peacekeepers” taking the loot. Wolf guarding the hen house is appropriate here.
The GWOT is precisely the problem. We're struggling in Afghanistan and tied down in Iraq, robbing Peter to pay Paul from one theatre to the other. The Army and Marine Corps are strained as it is. We just don't have the troops for another war of choice.
A war with Russia would require a draft. I don't know about you, but I'm not entirely thrilled at bringing a bunch of draftees into combat just to bail out an "American-leaning" country that decided to make an ill-advised incursion into a disputed area - one whose inhabitants want to break away from Georgia and have since the dissolution of the USSR - and provoked an overwhelming Russian response.
That's what the keyboard warriors don't get. To fight a third war would require the institution of a draft.
Gee, those AKs and RPKs (or RPDs, not sure which) sure look like they come from NATO, too. Yup, they sure are NATO loot. Oh, yeah.
NOT!
