The AFL-CIO and several union-friendly groups filed a formal complaint against Wal-Mart on Thursday, charging that the retail giant is pressuring employees to vote against Sen. Barack Obama.
Citing a Wall Street Journal report, the complaint accuses Wal-Mart of pushing its workers to oppose Obama (D-Ill.), who supports a measure that would allow workers to form unions without a secret-ballot election. The complaint calls on the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to investigate whether Wal-Mart has broken federal election laws.
Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) opposes the bill, called the Employee Free Choice Act.
Among the groups filing the complaint are WakeUpWalMart.com, the advocacy group American Rights at Work, and the Change to Win coalition, which is led by the Service Employees International Union and the Teamsters.
AFL-CIO President John Sweeney said that Wal-Mart has bullied employees for years.
Wal-Mart has shown exactly why our nation needs the Employee Free Choice Act, he said. We must outlaw the kind of behavior for which Wal-Mart is famous and give workers a free and fair choice on whether to form a union.
A Wal-Mart spokesman said that though the company opposes the bill, it has not told associates how they should vote.
We believe if the FEC looks into this, they will find what weve known all along, which is that weve done nothing wrong, said spokesman David Tovar. The real issue here is protecting the rights of individuals to cast a private ballot when voting.
Pot, Kettle.
Kettle, Pot.
Ironic isn’t it. The unions cry fowl with Wal-Mart while they’re trying to do away with the secret ballot.
My Father is a member of that commie organization. They get a magazine telling them how to vote.
The AFL-CIO continues flailing ineffectually in its now decades-long quest for relevance. Film at 11 . . . .
The so-called “Employee Choice Act” would eliminate secret ballots in union representation votes, allowing the union thugs to identify and intimidate those who don’t want the union - and would allow unions to gain recognition by a card check system, meaning if they had enough cards calling for an election, the union would automatically be recognized without actually having to have an election. It would also eliminate the NRLB’s role in the process.
Sen Obama supports legislation to take away your right to a secret non-coerced vote so we can charge you union dues to support the democratic party. We know you will support us if we can just get the cops to step aside so we're trying to get the courts to order that. It is in your best interest to support us as I know you and your kids who live at 1432 Main will do.
See you around,
Vito
Can we sue the unions?
Commie organization hits the nail on the head.
Did someone end the secret ballot? How can either the unions or the employer know how anyone votes?
It is high time that WalMart got smart and started to fight back!
“AFL-CIO President John Sweeney said that Wal-Mart has bullied employees for years.”
“bullied” eh. This Union’s President has a case of the favorite word (seemingly) of this political campaign season, AUDACITY.
I’ve heard and read the stories about Wal-Mart, but I’ve heard and read the stories about that union far more over the years.
Walmart wants a secret ballot because they are bullies and want to intimidate people who don’t vote their way...
Wait...
And Obama is against secret ballots which means Walmart must therefor be against Obama which as we all know should be illegal. Opposing Obama’s policies is evidence of a federal crime.
But Walmart is a bully.
Yes, and the RATS on the Hill support it. President Bush or McCain will never sign it but BO would.
The unions and the Democrats are pressing hard to make union votes public, so the unions thugs can beat the snot of of the no voters.
It’s a real laugher to see the AFL-CIO calling someone else bullies.
hahahahah, my VERY first thought
(The AFL-CIO and several union-friendly groups filed a formal complaint against Wal-Mart on Thursday, charging that the retail giant is pressuring employees to vote against Sen. Barack Obama. )
Oh I get it.
Its Okay Dokey for the Unions to steal money from their members and then use that money to back the candidates they believe will be in their pocket (read Democrats), but whoa be to anyone that tries to work for the other guy or (read) any Republican
What business is it to the Unions what Walmart does? The workers there have not been forced into the unions yet.
