Possible VP Nominee: Jerusalem is "Ground Zero"
Israel National News (Arutz Sheva) ^ | August 3, 2008 | Gil Ronen

(IsraelNN.com) Virginia Republican Congressman Eric Cantor, whom Republican presidential candidate Senator John McCain is considering naming as his vice-presidential running mate, said in a speech last November that Jerusalem is "Ground Zero in the global battle between tyranny and democracy" and is "Israel's lifeblood."

Speaking during a visit to Israel for the "One Jerusalem" event, which protested the Annapolis summit, Cantor said: "Jerusalem is not merely the capital of Israel but the spiritual capital of Jews and Christians everywhere. It's the site of the First and Second Temples, which housed the Holy of Holies, and it's the direction in which we Jews face when we pray. This glorious City of David is bound to the Jewish people by an undeniable 3,000 year historical link."

Jerusalem, Cantor said, "is Israel's lifeblood. No one understands this better than Israel's enemies. That is precisely why they still engage in a systematic campaign to erase the historical link of the Jews to this great city. For if Israel were severed from Jerusalem, the Jewish state would lose its sense of legitimacy and its will to fight; only then could Israel be destroyed."

'Jerusalem is Ground Zero' "What befalls Jerusalem threatens the security of the United States and its allies worldwide. That's because Jerusalem and Israel are Ground Zero in the global battle between tyranny and democracy, radicalism and moderation, terrorism and freedom."

Speaking in Hebrew, Cantor quoted Israel's first Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion, who said: "If a land has a soul, then Jerusalem is the soul of the Land of Israel."

Rep. Cantor, chief deputy minority whip in the House of Representatives, has reportedly been asked to supply Sen. McCain with personal documents for the vetting process.

Jewish Senator Joe Lieberman ran for vice president with Democratic nominee Al Gore against George W. Bush in 2000 and narrowly lost. The senator, who was Sen. Barack Obama's mentor in the Senate, has since left the Democratic party to become an independent and is backing Sen. McCain for president.

The real question is ... Can Cantor swing enough Jewish and conservative votes to win the ticket?

Barky? Oh he is off on vacation.

Meanwhile, Senator Corker (who is not at risk) talked to Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit to wail that his sponsored bill is better than Senator McConnell’s.

Somehow I think that Mitch doesn’t ask for PETA’s approval nor approval from the ACLU

Glenn thought that Corker felt that he was getting bad press. The problem is I believe that Corker deserves it.

“Can Cantor swing enough Jewish and conservative votes to win the ticket?”

I think so. Answering your question in reverse:

He certainly has better conservative bona fides than McCain.

And I think we could split the Jewish vote 50/50 instead of the usual 70/30. SO MANY Jews think of Pat Buchanon and James Baker when they think of the Republican party. Cantor shows that it “OK” to be Jewish and Republican -— ESPECIALLY with Lieberman coming in to stump for McCain.

Cantor sounds intriguing but needs to have his name floated a little more prominently to gauge enthusiasm and fear (the more the Dems hate him, the better).

Enough with the Romney/Pawlenty stuff. We need the conservative talking heads to start discussing some other (actual conservative) candiates.

Sorry, I am confused but I am not well informed.

I posted to the wrong thread. I was talking about the Gang of 10 deal. Corker is getting pressure because voters like what the House is doing and are beating him up on this deal with the Democrats in the Senate.

Glenn Reynolds is a law professor in Tennessee (Corker’s state) who also blogs/podcasts on Instapundit. It’s a good site. He’s a strong defense libertarian, but he is a libertarian.

Not news. Jerusalem has been ground zero for 2500 years.
