Word reaches me out here that some people back home think that Michael Phelps is boring. They are having trouble because his victories are inevitable. Perhaps I should point out that the rising of the sun in the morning is inevitable, yet it is the most amazing thing you will ever see in your life. Its inevitable - still - that the swifts fly from Africa to England and back every year, but its still a matter of wonder and joy.

Sex and the springboardThere is still the occasional day when the Brits seem to have more freedom of speech than we do...
Just managed to catch another round of the synchrinised diving. It was the springboard today, and the British pair, Nicholas Robinson-Baker and Benjamin Swain, were doing their stuff. Their achievement was, it must be said, in reaching the final. Theirs is a sport not without beauty, but it always seems to have a homoerotic whiff about it as well. It all looks like a wonderfully elegant gay suicide pact.
Michael Schumacher’s Formula One victories/championships were “inevitable” also. But it was damned exciting watching him drive the car!
How many more events does Phelps compete in? He’s got 5 gold medals, does he have to ace 3 remaining events or can he blow one?
Nothing about his victories are inevitable - if he slacked off in his training the insurmountable edge he apparently enjoys would evaporate almost immediately.
I bet he doesn’t think it’s boring.............and that’s the only one who counts, beside his family................
Especially since all of the swimmers and gymnists (women and men) are gay.
The epitome of ‘rugged individualism’ who strive for excellence!
Absolutely amazing!
Nor is he the only one whose exploits make your eyes tear. All these great athletes are astounding, unbelievable.
Interesting about the “Speedo LZR Racer”.
That first relay was hardly inevitable, what with the greatest split time in history and two wall-touches within 10/100’s of a second. What more does the viewing public want?
Calling his wins inevitable sounds more like sour grapes than an aloof recognition of future events. If they really feel that way, then why bother with the Olympics at all? Why bother with watching any competition at all?
Not been around championship swimmers much, have you? I dare you to go up to Aaron Piersol, Dara Torres, Lenny Crayzelburg, Jason Lezak, and Amanda Beard (all of whom I've met personally, and whose teams and coaches I've been around in a peripheral way) and tell them they're gay and that championship swimming attracts a gay element.
They would be too polite to laugh in your face. They would laugh at you behind your back.
This olympics is my first experience with synchronized diving. My first thought was, this is the gayest ‘sport’ I;ve ever seen. Then I saw the two American divers interviews and I now KNOW it’s a gay sport.
I wouldn’t use the word ‘inevitable’ only because Phelps might wear himself down from exertion & some other swimmer-specialist who is ‘fresh’ could have the swim of his life. It’s just possible that, like the NE Patriots, he gets caught in a single event.
Maybe they thought the French choking was inevitable too.
Geez. No pleasing some people, is there?
