New York Times publishes correction... 48 years late US Navy Airforce Major John McCain lying on a bed in a Hanoi hospital

No one can accuse The New York Times of papering over its mistakes. America's most famous newspaper today issued a formal correction to a review of a Broadway production of West Side Story published no less than 48 years ago.
In a further sign of just how seriously the newspaper takes its role as a newspaper of record, the "Gray Lady" also confessed that it had wrongly described John McCain, the Republican presidential candidate, as a "former fighter pilot" in numerous stories over the past decade.
Also today, The Times came clean on having referred to Senator McCain as a Vietnam-era "fighter pilot" when in fact he was shot down while at the controls of an A-4 Skyhawk - technically an attack aircraft rather than a fighter.
The distinction was mocked by the New York gossip blog Gawker, which pointed out that the Navy fighter pilot school known as Top Gun used the A-4 to simulate Russian MiG fighters and the aircraft effectively met all the main criteria for a fighter - speed, manouevrability and the ability to shoot down other craft - even if its primary role was as an attack bomber.
"The Times should not be so easily cowed, particularly when 12 years worth of coverage is at stake,"

The NYT-WYTS wouldn’t know the difference between a fighter and a bomber if the were looking down the pitot tubes.......................
More like a senile old blue hair! Serves em right that they’re bleeding red!
What the hell is a US Navy Airforce Major? These dumbasses do even know the difference in ranks between the various services.
They made a very analytical distinction between reporting on an alleged affair of McCain and an alleged affair of Edwards this year. [sarcasm/]
The National Enquirer-The paper of record.
Sounds like the memory hole got clogged up and the NYT is looking for a good plumber.
Corporal Captain.
In the mid-70’s, another AF tactical weapons controller and I controlled most of the Dissimilar Air Combat Tactics for the Follow-on Operational Test and Evaluaiton of the F-15 Eagle. Topgun brought an F-5 and an A-4 to Luke AFB, AZ and more then represented themselves with exceptional airmanship. Both of these aircraft got off numerous shots against the Eagle and often the only out for the Eagle was to take it into the vertical where the slower, less powerful aircraft could not sustain the fight. As with any weapons system, it takes time for crews to learn to use its potential.
That is a new rank the Slimes dreamed up.
they don’t need a plumber. They need a proctologist.
null and void...
“US Navy Airforce Major John McCain “
No such thing as a Navy Air Force Major. You are mixing apple and lozenges. b-))
U.S. Navy rank structure...Ensign, Lieutenant, Lieutenant (j.g.)...Commander...Captain, etc.
U.S. Air Force rank structure...Second Lieutenant, First Lieutenant, Captain, Major...Colonel, etc.
After the Jason Blair affair they still think they have ANY crediBULLity?
The New York Times should also retract their claim of being "America's most famous newspaper". The National Enquirer outsells them, so that would indicate they are America's favorite "newspaper".
The NYT's would have a hard time claiming they are a "newspaper" whereas the National enquirer is just a "gossip rag".
I've never seen the NYT print "news", just unsubstantiated rumors backed up by anonymous "experts", whose qualifications can never be verified, and biased op-ed gossip written to support the NYT's latest Democrat showpiece.
In 2004 we were constantly reminded that Kerry served in Vietnam.
In 2008 we are constantly reminded the McCain KILLED in Vietnam.
Was he in a Hanoi hospital or PRISON?
Do hospitals typically break visitors arms?
He was shot down in 1960 was he?
Do hospitals typically break visitors arms?”
His records from Hanoi probably had it listed as PT (Physical Therapy) errr... or was that Physical Torture?. The NYT gets confused so easily. /s
