ALAMEDA COUNTY: Man charged in Perata carjack, and shooting of boy playing piano

2 others also indicted in theft of senator's red Dodge Charger -

An Alameda County grand jury has indicted an Oakland man on charges that he carjacked state Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata and, 12 days later, fired the shots that paralyzed a 10-year-old boy practicing the piano, authorities said Monday.

In addition to Jared Adams, 25, two other defendants were indicted in connection with the Perata case, court records show. The indictment, handed down late last month, allows prosecutors to take the case directly to trial.

On Dec. 29, carjackers stole Perata's state-issued red 2006 Dodge Charger as he waited at a light at 51st Street and Shattuck Avenue. Police said the carjackers probably didn't recognize Perata and targeted his Charger because of its 22-inch rims. The car was later found abandoned in Richmond.

On Jan. 10, Christopher Rodriguez was practicing the piano at the Harmony Road Music School at the corner of Piedmont and Pleasant Valley avenues when Adams allegedly robbed a gas station across the street and fired shots at an employee calling police, authorities said. The bullet that penetrated the music school's wall ripped through Christopher's spleen, kidney and spine before lodging in his side.

Adams and his girlfriend, Maeve Clifford, 19, were arrested after a car chase that ended with a crash of their stolen Ford Mustang at 51st Street and Telegraph Avenue, a block from where Perata was carjacked.

The fingerprints of both Adams and Clifford were found in Perata's car, and Clifford admitted to the carjacking, authorities said.

“Perata’s state-issued red 2006 Dodge Charger as he waited at a light at 51st Street and Shattuck Avenue. Police said the carjackers probably didn’t recognize Perata and targeted his Charger because of its 22-inch rims.”

Meanwhile, regular state employees paychecks are in doubt because Perata can’t get a state budget through ...

A state-issued Dodge Charger with flashy rims? One of the many reasons that Ca. faces a budget crisis with their spend-a-Dems out of control. But did he have his tires properly inflated as a good little Oblahmanite?

Oh, it gets better—how much you want to bet that the TAXPAYERS are paying for that car—IOW, it’s a state vehicle, not a “personal” one?

Not funny.
The kid was a 10 or 11 year old taking piano lessons at a music school.when he was shot. The shot went through the window of the station, across the street, through the wall of the school and hit the kid. He is paralyzed from the waist down. They showed him in the paper a few weeks ago at physical therapy.

No, it’s not a funny story, but the headline is atrociously written.

D'OH!

Reading is Fundamental (RIF), Sparky! It's amazing, really. When I was a recruiter (Navy), our official vehicles were bare-bones, bottom-of-the-line sedan type vehicles like Ford Focus, Chevy Malibu, stuff like that--nothing fancy.

Where the hell does the government (both state and federal) get off giving luxury vehicles to state officials for personal use when their salaries are more than adequate to buy such vehicles for themselves?

I know this is just so wrong, but I can't help it.

Prayers for the kid.

I hope the guy gets the max. Shooting a kid is just random cruelty. This man doesn’t belong on the streets.

Normally, I’d say he won’t get squat because SF is lib land. However, he dared to inconvenience one of the Ruling Elites, a Democrat at that, so they’ll probably throw the book at him.

At trial, Adams said his memory was “fuzzy” when he allegedly fired the shots at the gas station although he admitted carjacking Perata.

Adams is scheduled to be sentenced in May and faces 25 years to life in prison.
