If Michael Phelps goes on to win eight gold medals in the Olympic swimming competition at the Water Cube, he will owe a huge debt of gratitude to teammate Jason Lezak.
No, make that HUGE.
In one of the greatest anchor legs in swimming history, Lezak reeled in boastful Frenchman Alain Bernard in the final 50 meters to bring the United States home to a breathtaking victory in world-record time in the 4x100 freestyle relay to provide a riveting finish to this morning's program.
"It was a crazy thing to watch," said Garrett Weber-Gale, who swam the second leg for the U.S. "If there was anybody in the world who could do this, Jason was the one to pull it off. It was a perfect touch at the finish."

smashing the record by 4 seconds! Amazing.
Any chance this might be on video somewhere on the internet?
NBC is supposed to have a lot of stuff on their site, but I haven't looked. Watch their morning show (would that be the Today Show?). I'd be shocked if they didn't replay at least some of it.
Blogger describes amazing finish...
Check out the comments at the bottom. Interesting...
Found the video here. What a race! http://www.nbcolympics.com/swimming/?forcereload=true
That was sweet!!!
I said “Bernard is French for SILVER”. That got me a look.
Did most of America get to see this event live?
Hey France,Smash This.
Awesome Video!
I did see a replay a while ago this morning.
No doubt it will be shown over and over during the day.
Definitely something to behold.
oui. we saw it LIVE
tee hee
I did not see it, but what thrilling news to awaken to. I cannot imagine a finer or more delicious way to deliver the lesson to Mr Bernard that, in competition, heart is more important than mouth.
Thanks for posting the video link!
WE WILL SMASH THE AMERICANS.
Hmmmm...no.
If correct...that IS amazing.
Yes, it was HUGH!
Phelps, the first swimmer, got a nice lead, the middle two kept it close and the last swimmer had the swim of his life while the French closer clearly tightened up in the last 25 meters.
Once again, a case of a team beating itself by talking trash and firing up their opponents. You’d think athletes would learn that you don’t need to give your highly competitive opponents extra reasons to want to beat you.
Quote of the day! Lol!
They analyzed the swimmers and the math said France. France should have won. However, they forgot the “America” factor.
Awsome race, one for the books, one for the ages.
