AS I write, Russian tanks grind into a brave and isolated democratic state.
Assuming that the world's attention would focus on Beijing, Moscow stage-managed an elaborate act of aggression against Georgia.
But the world has changed since Soviet tanks rolled unchallenged into Afghanistan at Christmastime 29 years ago. Global communications now spotlight aggression instantly. remainder of article at website

What a lie:). Truth is just opposite. Georgia attacked Russian peacekeepers and citizens so russia came to rescue and defend them.

Oh really? Were there any Russian “peacekeepers” around the pipeline in Tblisi, and if so, why were your buddies bombing them?

I must admit that I am very torn on this and part of me does think that Russia had very little option but to invade to protect the Russian citizens. Dad who is virtually house bound watches an immense amount of TV from various sources, UK, worldwide and US as we have cable and satellite TV and your comments were his first comments to me when we heard of the invasion.
I understand how many people on this board feel though as Georgia has been very supportive of America and in particular the Bush Administration

I'm not sure where I stand on this, in light of the disgraceful U.S. policy towards Kosovo.
One of the best-kept secrets of the Russia-Chechnya conflict was the level of support among U.S. political leaders for the Chechen separatist movement. This dirty little secret was pretty much swept under the rug after the Beslan school massacre, of course.

Back in 1998-99 some so-called "neo-conservative" think tanks pushed hard for the Clinton administration to topple Slobodan Milosevic and support Kosovo's independence.
There's an open letter to Bill Clinton from a bunch of these jackasses floating around somewhere on the Internet (I think it was published in the New York Times). You'd be shocked at how many of the names on that letter look so familiar . . . mainly because they ended up in key positions in this Bush administration.
There's no reason to lay the blame for Kosovo at the feet of the Clinton administration. The current administration is 100% on board with that empire-building agenda.

Bound to be plenty of that, although it probably won’t be able to keep up with events.

Im sure we meant what we said whenever we told the Russians that a missile shield is a purely defensive measure against rogue states that threaten regional security. But Russians are a paranoid lot with a history of lousy political leadership. With the pronouncements that routinely come from their leaders, you can understand what a deep appreciation for irony the Russians have. Difficult to convince them to trust us even if we arent going out of our way to make them nervous.
Russia is slow to trust because they believe (rightly or wrongly) that NATO promised not to expand further East after Two Plus Four Treat. Of course NATO did expand East afterwards and the weak Russia did nothing about it at the time. It is not surprising that Russia sees the missile shield and radar with multipurpose use as further creep of NATO into its 'near abroad'.

I think it will be a Mexican standoff. The days are gone when the Red Army could march in and take over small countries without firing a shot. Russia is having its nose bloodied. The Georgians are not the Czechs of 1968.

If the Georgians have enough anti-tank and anti-aircraft guided missiles, this looks like really bad terrain for Ivan, just like it was bad news for the Nazis. Ivan might appreciate a way to save face.
