Press Release
Labor Day Reinstated as Paid Holiday at Shelbyville, TN, Plant; Tyson Foods Requested Change from Union
Springdale, Arkansas August 8, 2008 - Tyson Foods, Inc. announced today it has reached a new agreement with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), an American union, reinstating Labor Day as one of the designated paid holidays under the contract for covered employees in the Shelbyville, Tennessee, plant.
Tyson made this request on behalf of its Shelbyville plant employees, some of whom had expressed concern about the new contract provisions relative to paid holidays. In an effort to be responsive, Tyson asked the union to reopen the contract to address the holiday issue, and the union agreed to do so. The union membership voted overwhelmingly Thursday to reinstate Labor Day as one of the plants paid holidays, while keeping Eid al-Fitr as an additional paid holiday for this year only. This means that in 2008 only, Shelbyville employees will have nine paid holidays.
For the remainder of the five-year contract period, the eight paid holidays will include: New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and a Personal Holiday, which could either be the employees birthday, Eid al-Fitr or another day requested and approved by their supervisor.
This issue concerns only the plant at Shelbyville, Tennessee. Labor Day has always been celebrated, and continues to be, at the other 118 Tyson plants across the country.
The Shelbyville complex employs approximately 1,200 people. Approximately 1,000 workers are covered by the RWDSU union agreement at that location.

VEEERY INTERESTING!!!!
If the union membership voted overwhelming to keep Labor Day and junk the Moon-god Day, it appears that a majority Muslim workforce was the not issue here.
It was probably a small group of Muzzies, as always, trying to impose their religion on the majority, and a group of spineless, gutless white EuroAmerican politically correct capons caving in to them.
Could be. I’m hoping some Freepers from TN can give us more information.

I know I said no more Tyson stories, but this one begs to be pinged... Now, this is it!
Yes, it did! I emailed them a few days ago and got that press release as a response this morning! First smile of the day for me!
Great going people!
I know that the folks at the union claimed they had 700 Muslim members, and when someone called Tyson, Tyson said “our understanding is that the union will be revising the figure later.” In other words, the union got caught overstating the number.
A personal day that you can apply where you want it...that is how it should be. Good deal they were shamed into doing the American thing. God Bless the Internet!
Good job!!!!!
“In other words, the union got caught overstating the number.”
Wonder if the Union leadership is contaminated with Muzzies.
Wonder if there will be a replacement of union leadership there in the next elections.
Non-Muslims can;t co-exist with Muslims very long and still be non-Muslim. Islam is like an aggressive cancer.
No Washington’s Birthday?
A Happy bttt! :)
Looks to me like they still got the day off.
If there were 700 Somalis in a work force of 1200 as indicated in other stories, the "muzzies" were actually the majority.
Before you have a big whoop and holler, it looks like the "muzzies" won. Somebody just asked the union to add Labor Day back, so the company could make the rest of us happy and they can sell their chicken parts, and the company rolled over on the extra day off. They also give a personal day, so that everyone can get the same number of days off and not have to celebrate Moon-god day if they don't want.
I welcome corrections.
Hmm.
Well, everybody else got the personal day off too, so at least they aren’t entirely caving into the Muzzies.
Personally, I would like them all out of my country.
Send them all back to Dar el Islam.
It was these union workers’ leaders that should be asked to resign.
The heat got to be too much for Tyson.
Yes, everybody’s chicken just got more expensive cause they now have an extra holiday the company has to pay for.
Good job, reactionary bigots!
Way to kill the freedom to contract!
eat more beef
Yes, I noticed that too. At the risk of being immediately labeled racist for even noticing it, I find it inappropriate that Tyson honors Martin Luther King, who was a great man after-all, but not as important historically as President George Washington, the Father of our country.
