Texas Executes Mexican Despite Objections

HOUSTON — In a case that has drawn international attention, Texas executed José E. Medellín on Tuesday night in defiance of an international court ruling and despite pleas from the Bush administration for a new hearing. The execution came just before 10 p.m. Central time, shortly after the United States Supreme Court denied a last request for a reprieve. Protesters for and against the death penalty clamored in the rain outside the Huntsville Unit, about 70 miles north of Houston, where Mr. Medellín was executed by lethal injection. “I’m sorry my actions caused you pain,” he said to the witnesses present. “I hope this brings you the closure that you seek. Never harbor hate.” Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican, rejected calls from Mexico and Washington to delay the execution, citing the torture, rape and strangulation of two teenage girls in Houston 15 years ago as just cause for the death penalty. Mr. Medellín and five other teenage boys in his street gang took part in the rape and murder of the girls, Elizabeth Pena, 16, and Jennifer Ertman, 14. The gang raped the girls for an hour, then strangled them. Their corpses were found two days later.

I love Texas. Boo hoo, the poor guy didn’t get to talk to the Mexican Consular representative. That has nothing to do with his guilt!

You watch. Either Dubya or Congres will introduce a bill which takes away a state’s highway funds if they don’t abide by the US treaties etc. regarding treatment of foreign nationals.
But for now, states’ rights have been honored, thanks to Texas.

Seriously, shouldn’t the title be, “Texas Executes MURDERER Despite Objections”? Before conviction, they’re alleged; after, they’re thieves, rapists — murderers.

Stylebook change, again?

I used to have a T-shirt with the slogan "Yankee by birth, Texan by choice."

I'm back in Kansas now :(

To that end, Texas should go ahead an split itself into 5 states so Republicans can retain the Senate. That’d really p!ss off the libdems and help to dilute the northeast power base the libdems enjoy.

The easiest way for Mexicans to avoid being executed in the U.S. is to stay the f@*k home!

There isn't a hot enough place for such animals as the late Senor Medellin.

That's an insult to animals. What animal behaves in such a way? What animal rapes and kills for no reason at all? Animals kill to eat, to survive. Only sick, twisted evil HUMAN BEINGS behave in this way. Humans would be lucky if they could behave like animals.
