FBI investigates new attacks on US scientists

SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA: The FBI is investigating two bombings that targeted university scientists, the latest in a rash of attacks against biomedical researchers who experiment on animals, authorities say.

Both scientists work at the University of California, Santa Cruz. One of them and his family were forced to escape from a second-story window early on Saturday when a firebomb was lit on the home's porch, Santa Cruz police said. An adult was treated at a hospital and released.

Police Capt. Steve Clark called the bombing "an attempted homicide."

Also that morning, a firebomb destroyed a car belonging to another researcher. Clark said authorities were treating the attacks as "domestic terrorism."

The attacks came four days after police obtained animal rights pamphlets left at a Santa Cruz coffeehouse that contained the names and home addresses of university scientists.

"Animal abusers everywhere beware," the pamphlets read. "We know where you live."

Molecular biologist David Feldheim, whose front door was charred, was listed in the pamphlet. According to his Web site, Feldheim's lab uses mice to study the development of brain functions involved in eyesight.

Authorities would not identify the researcher whose car was destroyed but said that person was not named in the pamphlet.

Police said they have no suspects in Saturday's attacks, the first since February, when animal rights activists showed up at the house of a UC Santa Cruz breast cancer researcher during her young daughter's birthday party.

The masked protesters pounded on the front door, and one threw a punch at the researcher's husband as he tried to chase them away, according to police. The FBI is still investigating.

In recent years, three UCLA researchers who use non-human primates have been targeted with firebombs. Animal rights groups claimed responsibility for all three attacks.

More recently, masked protesters targeting UC Berkeley have scrawled graffiti and broken windows at scientists' homes.

FBI investigators said the attacks at different universities are probably not centrally coordinated. They do share similar tactics, however, including posting researchers' personal information online and in print, investigators said.

"These are odious assaults on individuals and on the principles of free inquiry by which we live," UC Santa Cruz Chancellor George Blumenthal said in a statement on Saturday.

Police said they plan to boost security for UC Santa Cruz researchers whose names appeared in the pamphlets discovered last week.

This morning NPR interview neighobors of of Bruce Ivans as well as his co-workers who all expressed wonder that the FBI was considering that Ivans may have been involved in the 2001 Antrax killing and distribution.

Along with the FBI’s complete mishandling of the “case” against Hatfield, I thought for a moment that this story was about the FBI attacking scientists.

Firebomb skeet is so much fun, especially when a Animal nut is under it.

These terrorists and PETA in general are the same ilk. PETA
supporters are barely against these acts in public.

With a slug barrel and extended 10-round magazine, loaded with alternate rounds of slugs and buckshot.

Probably the animal liberation front, a loose organization of animal terrorists with no central leadership. These creeps are what keep me up at night (figuratively). I dread the day that they discover my institute's use of animal testing and my involvement in it. These terrorists literally place animal life above human life in every way. If not for animal testing, there would be absolutely no advances in medicine, but they prefer "alternatives to drugs" and so they see all animal testing as "wasteful." Somehow killing a researcher's family is not seen as even equally "wasteful," let alone evil. They blame the victims for being attacked. Here's what the press office for the North American Animal Liberation said:
"It's regrettable that certain scientists are willing to put their families at risk by choosing to do wasteful animal experiments"
These freaks locked up on suspicion of supporting terrorism.

PETA is to ALF terrorists what CAIR is to Jihadists, though you’re right, PETA may actually be more connected to the terrorists themselves.

PETA KILLING DOGS, CATS

The defendants were arrested while in possession of a PeTA-owned van. Within the vehicle, police found an additional 13 dead animals and a homemade “kill kit,” allegedly containing lethal drugs that neither individual was licensed to possess. According to press reports, evidence suggests this type of activity may have been going on for years.

In a press release, NABR President Frankie Trull said, “We believe that individuals who financially support PeTA out of sincere compassion for animals would be shocked to learn that their contributions could be funding this type of egregious activity, rather than saving healthy animals...While hypocrisy has long been a hallmark of PeTA’s activities, the alleged killing and dumping of highly adoptable puppies and kittens is appalling and sickening behavior that must cast serious doubt on the legitimacy of PeTA, and their true objectives.”
